Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-34) reads Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham to second grade students at Miles Avenue Elementary School in Huntington Park on Friday (February 27, 2004)
Huntington Park, Los Angeles - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-34) reads Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham to second grade students at Miles Avenue Elementary School in Huntington Park on Friday (February 27, 2004). The visit was part of the National Education Association's Read Across America event, which coincides this year with Dr. Seuss's 100th birthday. Donning a red- and- white striped stovepipe hat featured in Dr. Seuss's famous Cat in the Hat, the Congresswoman spoke to the students about the importance of reading as a way of broadening their minds and encouraged them to always do their best in school. The Congresswoman's Los Angeles staff members also took part in the "Seussentennial" celebration by reading to students in classrooms throughout the 34th Congressional District. Last year, nearly 45 million children and adults participated in Read Across America to raise awareness about the fun and importance of reading and to encourage adults to volunteer their time to read to children in the community.
