CDDIS Bulletin - August 1995
Volume 10 No. 6
In this issue:
About the cover: The map on the cover of this issue of the CDDIS Bulletin shows the GPS and VLBI sites in Antarctica and vicinity. The O'Higgins site is operated by IfAG, Germany; Casey, Davis, and Macquarie Island sites are part of the AUSLIG, Australia regional network. The McMurdo GPS receiver is operated by NASA/JPL.
As one of the ways to revitalize interest in space geodesy and geodynamics, NASA/GSFC has investigated methods of improving communications within the domestic and international community. Several methods were considered and it was decided that establishing an electronic mail system at the CDDIS in combination with information disseminated through the CDDIS World Wide Web (WWW) Home Page for messages posted to this mail system would be an effective method for improving communication and re-establishing a spirit of togetherness which will benefit the global program.
The proposed Space Geodesy and Geodynamics Mail System will be used for routine reports and special messages which would be immediately forwarded to all addresses on the list. A particular advantage would be the ease with which participants will be able to express their interests and concerns. The content of mail messages could include the following types of inputs:
- regular reports on NASA HQ program status, problems, and issues (submitted by NASA HQ, GSFC, JPL, and others)
- synopsis of the bi-weekly Space Geodesy Project telecons held at GSFC
- summary reports on key meetings (e.g., WEGENER, DOSE, IGP, etc.)
- future activities (including meeting announcements) submitted by NASA staff, other organizations, or investigators
- planned observation programs of research groups including suggestions or invitations to participate in joint programs
- abstracts of papers submitted by investigators
- comments, suggestions, and complaints by program participants
An archive and index of all messages sent via the system will be kept at the CDDIS, with an interface to users provided via anonymous ftp and the WWW.
The initial mailing will consist of colleagues whose e-mail addresses are currently in the CDDIS data base; these persons will soon receive an e-mail message about this new mailing system. Comments, of course, are welcome and encouraged and can be addressed to John Bosworth at GSFC (301-286-7052 or jmb@ltpmail.gsfc.nasa.gov).
The CDDIS World Wide Web (WWW) home page provides access to information about the system as well as several documents of interest, such as the NASA Space Geodesy Program: Catalogue of Site Information, the Space Geodesy Personnel and Networking Directory, and previous issues of the CDDIS Bulletin. The current issue of the bulletin is on-line at the time of publication, therefore interested users can view the latest bulletin through the WWW. It is hoped that this method of publication will eventually augment/replace hardcopy mailings and thus save time and money at the CDDIS.
Two analysis groups have recently sent results to the CDDIS for availability to the user community.
GSFC VLBI 1995 IERS Solution. The GSFC VLBI analysis groups recently submitted their 1995 IERS results to the CDDIS for availability to the user community. This submission includes two solutions, 979f and 979g. The difference is that 979g also includes data acquired by NASA's Deep Space Network and provided by Ojars Sovers of JPL. The purpose of 979g is to use additional data for the celestial reference frame. The format of the files for the terrestrial reference frame is described in the file FORMAT.TRF. Note that some files are quite large because they contain the full covariance matrix. These files were compressed on CDDIS using UNIX compression and should therefore be transferred in binary mode; all other files are in ASCII format. The files for the celestial reference frame and EOP are in IERS format as in previous years although there are additional digits in some fields. The files associated with the two solutions are listed in CONTENTS.979F4 and CONTENTS.979G2. The other files have suffixes FF or GG depending on the solution. The solution, accessible via anonymous FTP on the CDDIS in the directory ANON_DIR:[VLBIGSFC.IERS95], consists of 32 files and is 15 Mbytes in size.
GFZ GPS 1995 IERS Solution. The GPS analysis group at the Geodatishes ForshungsZentrum in Potsdam Germany has deposited their 1995 IERS Annual Solution in the CDDIS. The solution, accessible via anonymous FTP on the CDDIS in the directory ANON_DIR:[GPSGFZ.IERS95], consists of the following four files:
- GFZ95P01.DESCRIPTION -- Description of the analysis
- GFZ95P01.ERP -- Earth rotation parameters
- GFZ95P01.SSC -- Station coordinates
- GFZ95P02.SSC -- Station coordinates and velocities
This section is designed to give brief notices of special events, new data sets, or problems encountered in recent months. The CDDIS staff believes the user community should be informed of these problems in order to ensure that the best results possible are produced from data issued by the archive.
Tables 1 and 2 on the following pages summarize the full-rate data for 1994 archived in the CDDIS as of July 1995. Table 1 shows the total number of passes by system for each satellite tracked; Table 2 displays the total number of observations. All full-rate Version A data sets have been released; the latest B release of the 1994 full-rate data set is for the month of July.

The latest issue (June 1995) of the Satellite Laser Ranging Newsletter of the SLR Subcommission of the CSTG has been published and is available through the WWW. The newsletter is accessible through the Space Geodesy and Altimetry Projects (SGAPO) WWW home page (URL: http://cddis.gsfc.nasa.gov/920_1/SGAPO.html) or directly using the URL: http://cddis.gsfc.nasa.gov/920_1pubs//slrnews/9506/slrnews_9506.html.
As of August 1, 1995, the SLR on-site (or quick-look) data and directories for the ETALON and GLONASS satellites have been changed. Prior to that date, the data from both ETALON-I and -II were stored in a single daily file, under yearly subdirectories of the SLR_DATA:[SLRQL.ETALON] directory. After August 1, these data are stored in files by satellite, under separate directories (i.e., SLR_DATA:[SLRQL.ETALON1] and SLR_DATA:[SLRQL.ETALON2]. Similarly, all tracked GLONASS satellites are now stored in separate directories and files. This convention will more closely follow the storage structure established for the SLR full-rate data posting system.
Since the June 1995 issue of the CDDIS Bulletin, the CDDIS has archived data from the following new GPS tracking sites:
