NASA Headquarters will hold another in its series of Total Quality Management Colloquia today at 1:00 pm EST in the Headquarters auditorium. Guest speaker for this session will be Dr. Daniel Roos, from the Center for Technology Policy and Industrial Development, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Roos is also the co-author of The Machine that Changed the World. He will discuss global competition's effects on the aerospace community. His remarks will be followed by a question-and-answer session. The seminar will be shown live on NASA Select TV. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Kennedy Space Center technicians remain busy with the post-mission processing of Atlantis, which is now inside Orbiter Processing Facility Bay #2, and getting Discovery ready for its + to the Vehicle Assembly Building, still set for Friday. Discovery is slated for a January launch for the STS-42 International Microgravity Laboratory-1 mission. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This evening at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, 1530 P St., NW, the Carnegie Council will host Ames Research Center SETI project scientists Dr. Jill Tarter for a presentation on "The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence: Science Fact, Not Fiction." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Tomorrow, from 2:30 to 4:00 pm EST, NASA will host another in its series of interactive educational programs. The 90-minute program will be broadcast live from Ames Research Center on the Galaxy VI satellite. Participants for this program Q which will explore the space environment as it impacts biological systems, including humans Q include NASA Life Sciences Division program scientist Dr. Ron White and Ames Center acting Chief of Life Sciences Dr. Joan Vernikos. Also tomorrow, the Office of Space Flight will hold its monthly press briefing from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm EST in Room 425, Building 10-B, at NASA Headquarters. Participants will include OSF chief Dr. William Lenoir and shuttle chief Robert Crippen. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The seven-member IML-1 flight crew will hold a press briefing to describe the mission and their on-orbit activities this Thursday, December 12, at 2:00 pm EST from the Johnson Space Center. The briefing will be carried live on NASA Select TV. This Friday, Dec. 13, the crew of the recently-completed STS-44 mission aboard Atlantis will hold a press briefing to describe their flight and narrate videotape and photographs they acquired during the mission. The briefing will be shown live on NASA Select TV at 2:00 pm EST. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The Johnson Space Center recently named two NASA astronauts and three payload specialists as payload crew for the second Life Sciences Mission - SLS-2. That mission, STS-58, has been set for a launch in mid-1993. Joining payload commander Dr. Rhea Seddon, M.D., as mission specialists are three-time spaceflight veteran Dr. Shannon Lucid and Dr. David Wolf, M.D. Named as payload specialist candidates for the seven-day life science research flight are: Dr. Jay Buckey, M.D., an assistant professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas; Martin J. Fettman, D.V.M., an associate professor at Colorado State University, Fort Collins; and Dr. Laurence Young, professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, and Director of MIT's Man-Vehicle Laboratory. Following further training, one of the three payload specialist candidates will be selected to fly as the prime payload specialist and the other two will serve as backup payload specialists. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Education and visitor center personnel at Stennis Space Center have been busy with the younger set this past week. The center's Early Education Monday program was conducted for 292 kindergarten students from four separate schools. In addition, visitor center personnel presented equivalent programs to third grade and kindergarten students at yet another school in the Center's region. A total of more than 370 kindergarten students were thus exposed to the thrill of science, engineering and space by the Stennis team.
