CBP Border Patrol Makes Two Pot Busts in Nogales Tunnels

contacts for this news releaseNogales, AZ – In the past 24 hours, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Border Patrol agents assigned to the Nogales Border Patrol Station uncovered drug tunnels and seized 265 pounds of marijuana. Yesterday afternoon, CBP Border Patrol agents assigned to the Nogales Station received intelligence on the possible location of a drug tunnel in downtown Nogales. Agents were dispatched to the area and located a small tunnel just west of the DeConcinni Port of Entry on West International Street. The tunnel was approximately 12 inches by 12 inches in diameter and began from south of the International Boundary Fence. No narcotics were seized nor apprehensions made in connection with this tunnel. Later in the evening, Nogales Border Patrol Agents operating Remote Video Surveillance Equipment observed objects coming out of a water grate located on West Street and Interstate 19. Agents immediately responded to the area and determined that the objects were bundles of marijuana. The agents seized four large bundles of marijuana weighing approximately 90 pounds. No arrests were made. This morning, agents continuing their investigation, discovered eight more bundles of marijuana in the drainage tunnel. The marijuana weighed 175 pounds bringing the total weight of the seizure to 265 pounds, with an estimated value of $212,000. The marijuana was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.This fiscal year, CBP Border Patrol Agents in the Tucson Sector seized 32,766 pounds of marijuana valued at more than $26 million.
