Detroit - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers inspecting a commercial truck at the Fort Street Cargo Facility found bags of marijuana mixed in with a shipment of peat moss.

On November 4, at approximately 2:15 a.m., CBP officers at the Fort Street Cargo Facility encountered a 30-year-old Canadian citizen as he arrived from Windsor, Canada in a commercial truck. The truck was selected for examination by the Gamma Ray Inspection Technology and anomalies found in the shipment resulted in a need for a further physical examination. Officers discovered several large garbage bags that contained smaller vacuum sealed bags of what appeared to be marijuana. The officers tested the contents of the sealed bags resulting in its positive identification as marijuana.

A total of twelve garbage bags containing three hundred fifty four plastic bags of marijuana totaling 407 pounds were removed from the truck.

The driver was turned over to officers from the Trenton Police Department Task Force for further processing and prosecution.

“For the second time in four weeks our officers used their experience and training to prevent drugs from entering the country,” said Port Director Roderick Blanchard. “Because of their dedication and hard work these drugs will not find their way to our communities.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
