AFS Other Names:   N.A.

AFS Synonyms: The authors of this list (1980, Fisheries (Bethesda) 11(1):28) reviewed the common
names of the Atlantic redfishes and emended the common name, Labrador redfish, to Acadian redfish.
The market names redfish and ocean perch apply to all Atlantic species of Sebastes including the three
in our region. The name beaked redfish applies both to this species and to S. mentella.

The name golden redfish is adopted. The name ocean perch is dropped because it is applied as
a market name to all Atlantic species, including the three in our region, and not solely to S. norvegicus.
It has been shown by B. Gernholm and A. Wheeler, 1983, Zool. J. Linn. Soc. 78:238-240, that the basis
of Linnaeus's 1758 account of the taxon Perca marina, long-believed to be a scorpaenid "Sebastes marinus,"
is, in fact, eferrable to the family Serranidae and to the species generally known as Serranus scriba
Linnaeus, 1758. The proper name for the golden redish is Sebastes norvegicus (Ascanius, 1772), and a partial
synonymy and listing of usage is given by M. Blanc and J. C. Hureau, 1973, Check-List of the Fishes of
the Northeastern Atlantic and of the Mediterranean, UNESCO, Paris,
pp. 583-584. This change of name
was also adopoted by D. E. McAllister, 1990, Syllogeus, 64:188.
