Picture some of the most scenic vistas in the United States—towering mountains, the surging Pacific surf, evergreen forests, lush coastal wetlands and high desert lakes—and see them on national wildlife refuges in this region. Anglers visiting the region’s wildlife refuges will find species as diverse as sturgeon and sunfish, channel catfish and Chinook salmon, along with exceptional fisheries for bass and walleye. And, of course, trout: brook and brown and the natives—cutthroat, rainbow and the legendary steelhead. Saltwater will yield various salmon, striped bass, halibut and snapper.

Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge

Managed as part of Hopper Mountain NWR Complex, 1055 Guadalupe St. (Scenic Hwy. 1), Guadalupe, CA 93434; (805) 343-9151. Office hours, 9:00 am-3:00 pm. Nearest communities include the City of Guadalupe and Pismo Beach. Nearest highway is Hwy. 1. Surf fishing and access to the refuge is south along the shoreline half-a-mile south of the end of the boardwalk. For more information, go to http://www.dunescenter.org. Available species include surf perch and striped bass. The refuge has no facilities. Fishing season is year-round.

Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Klamath Marsh National Wildlife Refuge

Modoc National Wildlife Refuge

Boat access is open April 1-September 30. Available species include largemouth bass, catfish, sunfish and rainbow trout.

Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge

Packer Unit, managed as part of the Sacramento NWR Complex, 752 County Rd. 99W, Willows, CA 95988; (530) 934-2801; http://refuges.fws.gov/profiles/index.cfm?id=11627. Office hours, 7:30 am-4:00 pm. Refuge is open sunrise to sunset. Nearest community is Ordbend. Nearest highway is Hwy. 45. The Packer Unit contains a 100-acre oxbow lake. Best time for angling is March-November for species such as bluegill and largemouth bass. A narrow dirt road provides access to an unimproved boat launch area. There is limited fishing from the shoreline. No facilities are available.

Salinas River National Wildlife Refuge

Nearest main highway is Hwy. 1. Nearest communities are Seaside and Monterey. Salinas River NWR provides access to surf fishing via a 1/3-mile trail. Waters include the mouth of the Salinas River and Monterey Bay, with approximately 1 mile of shoreline open to surf fishing. Fishing is primarily for sea perch and shark. There are no facilities on Salinas River NWR.

San Luis National Wildlife Refuge

Refuge waters include Salt Slough and the San Joaquin River on the east side of Hwy. 165. The fishing season is year-round. Available species include striped bass, crappie and catfish. No boats are allowed.

San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Fishing season is year-round by boat only on all open waters and navigable sloughs of the refuge, including lower reach of Tolay Creek and all of the northern portion of San Pablo Bay. No shoreline fishing is currently permitted. Saltwater species include flounder, striped bass, sturgeon, rays and sharks. Boat ramps are located in Vallejo, on the Napa and Petaluma Rivers.

Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge

Refuge waters include Salton Sea, a saltwater inland "lake," saltier than the ocean. There are approximately 35,500 acres of refuge lake area open to fishing, with water ranging from shallow to about 20 feet deep. Fishing season is year-round. Available species include orangemouth corvina, sargo, gulf croaker and tilapia. Boat fishing only is permitted.

Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge

No fishing is allowed at the Tijuana River mouth, in the lagoon, sloughs or marsh areas. Fishing is permitted only in the ocean.

Upper Klamath National Wildlife Refuge

Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge

Kakahaia National Wildlife Refuge

Refuge property includes approximately 1 mile of shoreline. Most common species in the ocean are omilu, weke a'a weke pueo, goatfish, hawkfish, surgeonfish, lai, kaku and snapper. Invertebrates most commonly taken include tako and ghost crab. No boats are permitted.

Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge

Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge (Lake Lowell Sector, Idaho)

Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge (Snake River Islands Sector, Idaho and Oregon)

Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge

Minidoka National Wildlife Refuge

Refuge waters include Lake Walcott; the reservoir behind Minidoka Dam (11,000 acres, of which 4,000 acres are open to boat fishing at certain times); Snake River, in the spillway area below Minidoka Dam (60 acres); and in Smith Spring and Gifford Spring boat-fishing lanes (80 and 200 acres, respectively). Boat fishing on Lake Walcott is permitted April 1-September 30 within the area designated by buoys. Boat fishing within the Smith Spring and Gifford Spring boat-fishing lanes is permitted year-round. Bank fishing is also permitted year-round. Available species include rainbow trout and smallmouth bass. In parts of the refuge, stay on designated access roads to protect fragile sagebrush-grassland habitat.

Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge

Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge

(Note that there are no open-water lakes, only wetlands interspersed with cattails and bulrush, which form a maze of channels.) Fishing season is year-round. Species include rainbow, brook, cutthroat and brown trout as well as largemouth bass. No boats are permitted January 1-June 14; non-motorized boats and boats with battery-powered electric motors are permitted June 15-July 31; non-motorized boats and boats propelled by gas motors 10 hp or less are permitted August 1-December 31.

Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge

Malheur National Wildlife Refuge

Anglers may fish year-round from Page Dam to the confluence of the Blitzen River and Bridge Creek on the following waterways: Blitzen River, East Canal, Mud Creek and Bridge Creek. Anglers may fish on Krumbo Reservoir from the fourth Saturday in April until the end of October. Available species are primarily crappie, largemouth bass, rainbow trout and redband trout. Non-motorized boats and boats with electric motors are authorized on Krumbo Reservoir.

McKay Creek National Wildlife Refuge

Fishing is available March 1-September 30. Available species include rainbow trout, crappie, black bass, sunfish and yellow perch. The refuge's facilities include a seasonal boat launch.

Mid-Columbia River National Wildlife Refuge Complex

Refuge waters include small gravel ponds and a lake created by a hydroelectric dam on the Columbia River. Fishing is available March 1-September 30. The sloughs on the McCormack Unit are closed to fishing to protect fragile waterfowl habitat. Available species include steelhead, salmon, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill, perch, walleye, catfish and sturgeon.

Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge

Nearest main highway is Hwy. 140. Nearest community is Lakeview. Primitive access roads. Refuge waters include Dufurrena Ponds (20 acres) and Big Springs Reservoir (335 acres). Fishing season is May 15-November 15. Freshwater species include rainbow trout, largemouth bass, crappie, sunfish and yellow perch. Only motorless boats are permitted on Big Springs Reservoir and only float tubes on Dufurrena Ponds. Catnip Reservoir (120 acres) is also open September 1-November 15. This is catch and release only, with only single barbless hooks for cutthroat trout.

Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge

Managed as part of the Mid-Columbia River NWR Complex, is located near Irrigon, OR and Paterson, WA. The mailing address for the refuge is Mid-Columbia River NWR Complex, P.O. Available species include bass, crappie and carp in the refuge ponds and sturgeon, salmon, steelhead, walleye, crappie, sunfish, trout and bass in the Columbia River. Access to fishing areas is by rough unpaved roads.

Washington

Columbia National Wildlife Refuge

Fishing, boats or other flotation devices are not allowed on impoundments on and along Crab Creek in Marsh Units I and II. Hanford Reach National Monument/Saddle Mountain National Wildlife Refuge

The monument/refuge is open daily from 2 hours before sunrise to 2 hours after sunset. Nearest community is Richland. Nearest highway is Hwy. 240. Special angling highlights are the nation's largest remaining Columbia River fall Chinook salmon run and sturgeon population. Available species include largemouth and smallmouth bass, and steelhead. Methods generally involve motorboat trolling or drifting, and bait and fly fishing from the river shore. The refuge's facilities for anglers are a narrow, 2-lane concrete ramp at the White Bluffs launch. Primitive launches are located just downstream of the Monument at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's Ringold Fish Hatchery, and near the Vernita Bridge rest area. Developed launches are available downstream of the monument in Richland, Kennewick and Pasco city parks. Fishing season is year-round.

Potter's Pond (15 acres) has a 5-fish limit, and electric motors are allowed. The Little Pend Oreille River (9.9 miles) is selective gear only and mostly catch and release.

McNary National Wildlife Refuge

Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge

Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge
