Seismicity Report for Northern California, the Nation, and the World for the week of October 17 - 23, 1996 Stephen R. Walter U.S. Geological Survey 345 Middlefield Rd. MS-977, Menlo Park, CA 94025 San Francisco Bay Area During the seven-day period ending at midnight on October 23, 1996 the U.S. Geological Survey office in Menlo Park recorded 21 earthquakes of magnitude one (M1) and greater within the San Francisco Bay area shown in Figure 1. Three were as large as M2. This total compares to 28 earthquakes during the previous seven-day period (October 10 - 16), four of which were as large as M2. What activity there was during the past week occurred primarily along the Calaveras fault. Two of the week's three M2 earthquakes occurred along the central part of this fault, the first a M2.2 on Sunday about five miles northeast of Morgan Hill (#1/1), the second a M2.3 on Monday about seven miles southeast of Gilroy (#3/1). A pair of small events also occurred at the northern end of the Calaveras fault about four miles north of Dublin (#2/1). The San Andreas fault was largely inactive with only one earthquake as large as M2. This M2.9 temblor occurred early Wednesday morning about seven miles northeast of Prunedale (#4/1). It was reported felt by some residents of that community. Northern & Central California Activity remained light in the rest of the region. For the second week in a row, the only earthquake as large as M3 occurred at the Geysers geothermal area, a M3.5 that occurred early Saturday morning (#6/2). Aside from a pair of M2's northeast of Covelo (#8/2) the Coast Range was quiet. The North Coast was marginally more active than during the previous week with four earthquakes as large as M2. Three of these occurred west and northwest of Eureka, all located within the Gorda Plate that is underthrusting this part of the state (#4,#5,#9/2). The fourth occurred along Mendocino fracture zone about 16 miles west of Petrolia (#10/2). The eastern Sierra Nevada saw continued, though diminished, activity. A single M2 event occurred about 20 miles north of Truckee, site of three M2 earthquakes during each of the two previous weeks (#2/2). Similarly, three M2 events occurred east of Markleeville, half the number seen during the previous week. In the central part of the range, a M2.9 occurred last Friday afternoon about 14 miles southeast of Yosemite Village (#3/2). Long Valley Caldera No earthquakes as large as M2 occurred in the caldera during the past week, nor in the Sierra Nevada terrane to the south of the caldera. Activity was limited to a half dozen M1 events in Mt. Morrison area. USA Seismicity (October 13 - 22) According to data provided by the National Earthquake Information Center, the largest earthquake in the United States was a M5.7 in central Alaska that was felt strongly in much of central Alaska and as far away as the western Yukon Territory, Canada (#5/5). Slightly smaller was a M5.3 beneath the central Cook Inlet area that was widely felt in south-central Alaska (#3/5). The largest earthquake in the lower 48 states was a M4.2 in the northern Laramie Mountains of central Wyoming that was felt most strongly in the Casper area (#4/4). Slightly smaller was a M3.7 south of the Wind River Range (#6/4). Other notable events in the Rockies were a pair of M3's in the Hebgen Lake area along the Wyoming/Montana border (#1/4). Other earthquakes of note include a M3.7 beneath the Nellis Air force Range in south-central Nevada (#3/4) and a M4.0 in the Bullion Mountains southeast of Barstow, CA (#5/4). The Planet Earth (October 13 - 22) A strong earthquake occurred about 75 miles southeast of Kagoshima, Kyushu, Japan early last Friday morning (#3/5). This Ms6.6 earthquake was felt most strongly in eastern Kagoshima Prefecture and generated a local tsunami with wave heights up to 17 cm recorded on Tanega-shima. It was followed 28 hours later by a second Ms6.6 earthquake nearer southern Kyushu that produced some damage at Miyazaki and generated another tsunami with wave heights of 110 cm measured at Miyazaki.
