Abstract The paper discusses the organization by the PIARC Committee on Surface Characteristics of an international experiment to compare and harmonize skid resistance and texture measurements. Specifically, the goal was to harmonize the many different pavement friction measurement methods used in different countries. The paper describes several studies conducted in several European countries. These studies are reviewed: Belgium: a prenormative research for European normalization; France: use of two different devices to assess the skid resistance of the wearing course; Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands: a joint experiment comparing the results of different skid resistance devices; Hungary: the use of IFI for a probabilistic pavement performance modeling framework; Mexico: a comparative analysis between the British Pendulum and the Mu Meter.
