Japan Festival | Summer Festival of Music and Poetry

JAPAN FESTIVAL WEEKEND
June 8 & 9, 2002

Celebrate the reopening of Longfellow National Historic Site and the 30th Anniversary of the park's establishment! Our special weekend of activities focuses on several aspects of Japanese culture and features a viewing of beautiful Japanese screens conserved through the Save America's Treasures program. All programs are FREE and take place at Longfellow House, 105 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA. No reservations are required. Saturday, June 8
1:00 - 3:00 pm
Demonstrations of IKEBANA(flower arranging), ORIGAMI(paper folding), and calligraphy. Pottery making by master potter Makoto Yabe. Participation by Japanese students from SHOWA University/Brookline, MA campus.

Sunday, June 9
1:00 & 3:00 pm
Illustrated talks by a conservator from T. K. McClintock, LTD. on the conservation treatment of historic Japanese screens from the Longfellow collections made possible through the Save America's Treasuresprogram.

4:00 - 5:30 pm
Traditional Japanese music performed on the KOTO by Ayakano Cathleen Read and her students. Translations of Japanese poetry read by Victor Howes and Etsuko Takino.

SUMMER FESTIVAL OF MUSIC AND POETRY
Longfellow National Historic Site joined the national park system in 1972. We celebrate our 30th anniversary year with a summer of music, poetry, and fun! All events take place on the side lawn of Longfellow House, 105 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA. Programs are FREE and open to the public. No reservations are required. Seating is limited; blankets and lawn chairs are encouraged. No parking is available. Co-sponsors include the Friends of the Longfellow House, New England Poetry Club, and the Longy School of Music. Theatrical performance based on original Washington letters and presented by professional interpreters Mary Wiseman of Colonial Williamsburg and Robert Kratz.

Sunday, July 7 at 4:00 pm
Poems and Music of Freedom

Readings and book signing by Wellesley College poets Ifeanyi Menkiti, David Ferry, and Frank Bidart. Performance of America the Beautiful by vocalist Laura Marshall of the Longy School of Music.

Ensemble performance of chamber music for wind instruments.

Poetry by James Tate
Reading and book signing by Pulitzer-prize winning poet and recent author of Memoir of the Hawk. Musical interlude by vocalist Liana Bishop of the Longy School of Music and friends.

Women's a cappella ensemble performs an eclectic repertoire of world music together with a special arrangement of Longfellow's poem Psalm of Life.

Poetry by Donald Hall

Reading and book signing by prize-winning poet and Guggenheim fellow whose most recent volumes of poetry include The Painted Bed and Without.

Ensemble Chaconne

Peter H. Bloom, Carol Lewis, and Olav Chris Henriksen present a program of the great Baroque masters (Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and others) on period instruments including the flute, viola da gamba, and lute.

Afternoon of Music and Poetry
Readings by award-winning poets Cleopatra Mathis, author of What to Tip the Boatman?, and Diana Der Hovannessian, author of The Burning Glass. Dan Teager and friends add to the festivities with traditional Armenian and Greek music.

Beat City
Percussion duo of Bob Schulz and Bill Manley demonstrate creative possibilities for music-making on a variety of rhythmic and melodic percussion instruments from around the world - with a unique hands-on opportunity for the audience!
