 Know Before You Go
Kick-off of the "Know Before You Go" Campaign
Message from Acting Commissioner Charles Winwood

(06/20/2001)
This morning at a press conference held at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, U.S. Customs officially kicked-off the "Know Before You Go" campaign. The start of the campaign coincides with the beginning of the busy summer travel season, and the peak time for Customs' processing of international passengers.

The goal of "Know Before You Go" is to inform members of the public about Customs rules and regulations before they travel overseas or enter the United States. Now, by viewing a specially enhanced "Know Before You Go" section on the Customs web-site (www.customs.gov), travelers can access information that will make their return through Customs as smooth and efficient as possible.

The new "Know Before You Go" section includes links to the "Know Before You Go" brochure, tips to facilitate clearance through Customs, advice from a Customs inspector on international travel, listings of Customs regulations and procedures, answers to frequently asked questions concerning U.S. residents who travel to other countries, and information on the different programs Customs has in place to handle traveler complaints. There are also links to other travel-related web sites and an on-line form that travelers can use to send us feedback on their Customs experience.

The "Know Before You Go" campaign is important for several reasons. It will improve the efficiency of passenger processing. It will ease the concerns and questions of travelers unsure of Customs regulations. And it will support the dedicated efforts of Customs personnel to provide the very best in service to America's travelling public.
