History
The Ajo Station is challenged with coordinating coverage along operational overlaps with the Casa Grande Station to the east and the Wellton Station, of the Yuma Sector, to the west. The Ajo Station coordinates enforcement efforts in the western portion of the area of responsibility by detailing agents to Yuma Sector's Camp Grip.

In the eastern portion of the area of responsibility, the Ajo Station operates Papago Farms Camp. The facility at Papago Farms is staffed with agents from the Ajo Station and Casa Grande Station.

The Ajo Station also operates Bates Well Camp. Throughout the year, Bates Well is staffed with a combination of BORSTAR and Ajo Agents.

The effect of these camp facilities is to eliminate the seam in coverage in these very remote regions between the station's areas of responsibility. Agents from the different stations work together while assigned to the camps.

Much of the operational area lies within environmentally sensitive or protected lands including the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, Bureau of Land Management lands, Barry M. Goldwater Bombing Range, and Tohono O’Odham Nation.

To affect an illegal entry within the Ajo area of responsibility, illegal aliens are often committing to several days in the remote desert, with little to offer in relief. Because of the remoteness, a large portion of the area must be patrolled on foot, by horse patrol, ATVs, and motorcycles. Rough, rocky terrain, flat desert covered in cactus and brush, and numerous mountainous regions are predominant in the area and make travel, even in accessible areas, difficult.

Agents combine sign-cutting and tracking with ground sensors and night vision equipment. There are currently no permanent remote video surveillance systems within the Ajo area of responsibility. Through the right combination of personnel, technology, and infrastructure, the Ajo Border Patrol Station continues to gain, maintain, and expand control over the 64.3 miles of border within its area of responsibility.

Area of Responsibility
The Ajo Station is located 9 miles south of Ajo, Arizona, along State Route 85, and approximately 120 miles west of the Tucson Sector headquarters. The international border and the Lukeville Port of Entry lie approximately 27 miles south of the station.

The current station was constructed in 1987 and was designed to accommodate 25 agents. Three modular buildings were added in 2002 to ease overcrowding as the station eclipsed the 100 agent mark. As of May, 2007, there are nearly 200 agents assigned to the Ajo Station and manpower is expected to grow even further in the near future. Plans for a new station are currently underway and construction of a garage and processing facility are currently underway.

The Ajo area of responsibility encompasses a total of 64.3 miles along the international border and nearly 7000 square miles of operational area. The border area begins at the Papago Farms on the Tohono O’Odham Nation, continuing west through the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and the Lukeville Port of Entry, and ends south of the Granite Mountains on the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge at the Pima County / Yuma County line.

The area of responsibility stretches north through the town of Gila Bend and continues north to the town of Buckeye, located 2iles west of Phoenix. Ajo Agents work several significant highways, including State Routes 85 and 86, and Interstates 8.
