CBP Explorer Post 2303, Getting Involved in the Community

(09/04/2008)
Explorers from Post 2303 in Eagle Pass have made it a priority to help out their community. The post consisting of 25 enthusiastic young men and women have participated in a couple of events over the past few months, helping others. On May 16th they helped the American Cancer Society with their Annual Relay for Life. The explorers helped the organizers set up the event and participated as well.

On June 7th, they helped the Texas Game Warden with the Annual Take a Kid Fishing Day. The explorers helped young kids with their fishing poles and made sure they did not wander off from their parents. They helped the game warden pass out prizes and awards donated by local businesses to the participants.

The port’s Explorer Post has long been a critical element of our outreach effort. With relatively fewer activities for the youth in this community than the larger cities have to offer, the Explorer program fills a vital need. Explorers are given an in-depth exposure to the law enforcement environment along with the positive role models that tend to be in short supply in the smaller communities along the Mexican border. Even if an Explorer decides not to follow a career in law enforcement, the traits and discipline they derive from the program gives them a significantly better chance at success no matter what career path they ultimately take. Additionally, when CBP officers devote their time and effort in serving the communities where they are assigned, carrying out their law enforcement duties and responsibilities always becomes just a little bit easier.

CBP Explorer Post 2303 was started in 1996 at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry. The program has endured its ups and downs over the years but under the direction of new Post Advisor, Rodolfo Chacon the program has been re-energized. The young men and women in the program want to learn about careers in law enforcement and help their community. The post has been overwhelmed with the number of young adults wanting to join the program.
