Hopi Earth Day

This year’s theme for Hopi Earth Day is “Hopi Tuuwaqatsit Tuuwala,” or
“Protecting Mother Earth.” The Hopi Cultural Preservation Office is hosting the
event at the Veteran’s Memorial Center. Booths will be set up by tribal, state
and federal agencies to teach children about conservation, wildlife habitat,
native plants, water quality and quantity and other various environmental and
agricultural topics. NRCS will staff a soil demonstration booth.
Backyard Conservation Water Fest 2006

Mabelvale Magnet Middle School, Mabelvale, Arkansas
NRCS in Arkansas expects about 400 students, teachers, parents, agencies, and
community individuals to participate in demonstrating the use of Backyard
Conservation practices to help keep our waters SAFE (Swimable, Available,
Fishable, and Especially Drinkable). Participants will play an active role in
outdoor and hands-on activities to enhance the learning process about water
quality and quantity, conservation, non-point source pollution, total maximum
daily loads, and other water-related issues. Five lead agencies and groups of
a 20-member Partner Action Team will conduct conservation education
demonstrations.
Environmental Expo

Cal State San Bernardino
The Environmental EXPO is a free
environmental education family fair held annually on the campus of Cal State San
Bernardino in celebration of Earth Day. EXPO features activities for kids,
entertainment and hands on exhibits.
Coastal Dune Planting
April 20-21, 2006
Ft. Walton Beach - Okaloosa County
125 students and faculty from Walker Elementary School's 4th Grade class will
participate in coastal dune habitat management at Beasley Park. NRCS will give
instruction on coastal ecology and promote planting beach plants. Students will
plant several hundred of various beach plants for use in dune stabilization.
NRCS Earth Team Volunteers will assist with the event.
2nd annual Earth/Arbor Day celebration

Ft. Walton Beach, FL - Okaloosa County
The 2nd annual Earth/Arbor Day celebration to be held at Fort Walton Beach
Landing on NRCS will have a display and other vendors such as; Florida
Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Division of Forestry and Florida
Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will be in attendance. This event is
being held to help build an environmental awareness throughout the community.
Walker Elementary School students will tour the event.
Public tours of Big Escambia Creek Ecosystem Restoration Project
April 22, 2006 – 10:00am-noon
Extreme northeast Escambia county, the westernmost county in the Florida
Panhandle
RC&D and ACOE have restored a stream back to its natural channel and floodplain.
The stream had broken out of its channel to flow through a series of sandpits,
dumping a huge sediment load into the Escambia River. RC&D will set up a large
tent and tours will be guided by RC&D personnel and the District
Conservationist.

Idaho Falls Earth Day Celebration

Tautphaus Park Hockey Shelter and Zoo, Idaho Falls
More than 70 organizations are preparing educational displays to teach attendees
about recycling, water-wise landscaping (xeriscaping), noxious weed control and
other issues important to the quality of our environment. There will be live
entertainment and opportunities to win prizes such as trees, free tickets to the
zoo and museum, and a mountain bike. NRCS is one of 70 organizations
participating in this event.
Tree Give-Away for Earth Day

116 Fox Street, Council Grove
The Neosho Valley Quail Unlimited Chapter in conjunction with the Morris County
Conservation District will be giving away 375 of Containerized Ponderosa Pine
Trees, 250 each of the American Plum, Choke Cherry, Golden Currant, and Fragrant
Sumac shrubs in recognition of Earth Day. Trees are to be planted
in a windbreak and used for wildlife habitat.
Sixth Grade Day -- Clay Center
April 28, 2006,
North Timber Creek Area of Milford Lake, near Wakefield
The event is an outdoor educational activity for all sixth grade children in
Clay County, Kansas. Children will be rotated through seven sessions to include
water quality, wildlife, rangeland, soils, forestry, land
surveying and GPS. The sessions are designed to increase awareness, knowledge
and understanding of our natural resources.

A promotion of the Paola Tree Board to encourage city dwellers and landowners to
plant more trees. NRCS Backyard Garden Display plus discussion of
programs for conservation trees.
Enviroscape Display

Hodgenville Elementary School
The LaRue County Conservation District will demonstrate the Enviroscape Model to
approximately 100 elementary students. The purpose is to promote Earth Day and
discuss soil erosion that causes sediment in ponds, streams, point source and
non-point source water pollution.
Earth Day 2006 at the Louisville Zoo

Louisville Zoo, Jefferson County
The event attracts more than 40 environmental groups and organizations to
demonstrate some type of hands-on activity, to make people more aware of
their environment, natural resources, and or environmental concern. The day is
free admission for children under the age of eleven. The Jefferson County
Soil and Water Conservation District will have its A Bugs Eye View
display
where participants can view aquatic insects under microscopes, at various life
cycle stages. These insects are chosen for their ability to live in
different water quality levels and help to identify the quality of water found
in streams.

delicious apple and bradford pear trees.

Woodford County South Side Elementary School
Students at South Side Elementary will decorate paper
grocery bags with environmental messages for shoppers on Earth Day.
Versailles grocery store will bag shopper’s groceries in student-decorated bags on
Earth Day. Last year 1,000 bags with environmental messages
done by Woodford County elementary students were given out. Stewardship week placemats will
also be distributed to local
restaurants throughout the county.

Wildlife Tree planting planned, sponsored by Boyd County Conservation District
for students of Ramey Estepp home at Ashland Inc. Property located at
Martha, Kentucky. Ramey Estepp home is a home for troubled youths who live there
to receive rehabilitation and schooling as well as mentoring.
Celebration Earth

Twelve speakers will cover soils, recycling, water quality, and tree planting. Oldham County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) sponsored outdoor
event. All Oldham County 4th and 5th graders will attend the event to
learn about environmental stewardship and care for the earth and its natural
resources.

Pine Acres Elementary School
The Boyd County Conservation District Tree Give away and planting promotion
planned for elementary students of Pine Acres Elementary School in the Fairview
Independent School System. This will target some of the lower income students in
the north part of the county in a different school system.
3rd Annual Glacial Ridge Earth Day Event

Mentor
The Glacial Ridge Project (North America's largest wetland restoration project)
will be hosting it's 3rd Annual Earth Day activity.
Approximately 200 sixth grade students from Crookston and Red Lake Falls will
participate. There will be five learning stations with hands on activities. The
topics include prairie habitat, wetlands, survey and wetland restoration,
waterfowl identification, and a wood duck, bluebird, and mallard house station.
Staff from the Nature Conservancy, Ducks Unlimited, West Polk SWCD and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service will assist with the learning stations.
Teller Wildlife Refuge Wetlands Celebration

Teller Wildlife Refuge, Corvallis
The event is planned to highlight wetlands, engage new supporters and friends, and thank
supporters of refuge projects. Volunteers will be on hand at the refuge
to assist with public tours. The refuge will feature a wetland restored through
the NRCS Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program. Teller Wildlife Refuge staffers will recognize NRCS and other wetland
supporters at a brief ceremony.
Ash Tree Identification and Seed Collection Workshop

Findlay
NRCS and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources will conduct an ash tree identification workshop to help
citizens identify ash trees in order to participate in the NRCS Rose Lake Plant
Materials Center ash seed collection program. Because the emerald ash
borer is eradicating ash trees throughout the U.S., the NRCS Rose Lake Plant
Materials Center is coordinating ash seed collection efforts to help enable
future replanting efforts.
Environmental Fair
April 21, 2006 –
NRCS and the Mellette/Todd Conservation Districts are among many presenters
featured at the annual Environmental Fair targeting over 300 area 4th and 5th
grade students, including schools on the Rosebud Reservation. The staff will
focus on soils lessons that supports State Education Standards. A new portable soil tunnel
will be unveiled. South Dakota Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC)
will provide an Ag Mag, a full color tabloid, to over 28,000 3rd and 4th
grade students statewide. AITC promotes literacy about the role
agriculture plays in our society. The next issue is being distributed in
conjunction with Earth Day and focuses on natural resources. The Career Corner
features a South Dakota NRCS Soil Scientist.
Agricultural Earth Day

South Dakota Women Involved in Farm Economics have invited organizations, including
NRCS, to present at An Agricultural Earth Day educational event
targeting over 220 3rd grade students in the Rapid City Area. NRCS is
focusing on soils and soil biology with a lesson that supports State Education
Standards.
Earth Day at the Great Plains Zoo

NRCS and Minnehaha Conservation District are among exhibitors participating in the annual Earth Day at the Great Plains Zoo.
NRCS will set-up and staff its Backyard
Conservation and 18-foot soil tunnel and distribute State Soil bookmarks and conservation
tattoos. The crawl-through soil tunnel educates children and
adults about soil resources. Average attendance is 2,000.
9th Grade Field Day

This annual event, organized by the Sandhills SWCD #241 for Odessa and Crane
County ninth grade students. It is a field day
where up to 200 students rotate through several stations that demonstrate the rainfall simulator,
GPS/Surveying, rangeland health, soils, and geology.
Youth Watershed Awareness Workshop

Senior Outreach Services, 116 West Fabra Lane, Boerne
A Youth Watershed Awareness Workshop will be hosted by the Kendall County
Resource Conservation & Development Council (RC&D) in partnership with Alamo
RC&D. The purpose of the workshop is for the youth from the Boerne Boys and
Girls Club in Boerne, Texas to study and learn about the Cibolo-San Antonio
River Watershed. Students will participate in hands-on activities followed by a
picnic. During the hands on activity, they will also seed an area along Easter
Creek. This part of Easter Creek is the only low water crossing to get to the
Senior Outreach Services, a nonprofit adult day care and respite care center.
The crossing was upgraded to make the entry and exit safe year round.

Fourth grade students in Muleshoe and surrounding schools will see an erosion
demonstration using a rainfall simulator in addition to other ag-related
attractions.
Annual Boy Scout Fair

This annual Scout Fair is one of the largest events of its kind in the country
with between 70,000 to 90,000 Scouts and leaders in attendance. The scout's
conservation program exposes leaders and youth to program
ideas, service needs, and hands on activities in nature and conservation.
The Conservation Corner will house the NRCS booth to highlight conservation
issues.
Fort Hood Earth Day

NRCS staff plan to showcase conservation programs and information for urban and rural
settings. The Backyard Conservation exhibit will be set-up and staffed.

Soils/Ecological Regions of Texas. He will discuss the impact of agriculture and

Wyoming Children's Museum & Nature Center located in LaBonte Park, Laramie
Wyoming Children's Museum & Nature Center and Laramie Rivers Conservation
District will sponsor a park clean-up day. Children and their parents will
gather at LaBonte Park to remove debris. Afterwards, the children will attend a
craft session at the museum where they will assemble the Earth Day bracelets and
learn the meaning of each bead and the importance of caring for our Earth. All
invited to attend a brunch at 11:30 at the downtown Fire Department.
