Border Patrol, Mexican Police Capture Man after Robbery Attempt

contacts for this news releaseYuma, Ariz. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol agents from Yuma apprehended a suspected alien smuggler Wednesday night who also is believed to have robbed a passerby in Mexico while waiting to enter the U.S. illegally.Just after 9 p.m., agents working near San Luis, Ariz., observed a group of five individuals, including two smugglers, enter the U.S. from Mexico and responded to the location, but the individuals promptly fled back to Mexico by climbing the fence.According to Mexican Police officers, once back in Mexico the group was waiting for another opportunity to enter the U.S. when a man walked past the group about 9:45 p.m. The two smugglers stopped the individual, brandished pistols and robbed him of about $40 and his shoes. The other individuals in the group flagged down a passing Mexican police car to report the incident, causing the robbers to flee the scene by climbing the border fence and entering the U.S. A Border Patrol agent spotted the individuals and was able to apprehend one, a 17-year-old male, while the robber’s partner fled along the fence before climbing back into Mexico where he was apprehended by Mexican Police.Both individuals were positively identified by the victim as well as the individuals waiting to be smuggled into the U.S.The individual captured by the Border Patrol was transported to the Yuma Border Patrol station for processing, where a records check revealed multiple prior apprehensions. He is being presented for prosecution where he faces being formally removed from the United States, at which time he will be turned over to the Mexican authorities.U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of the nation’s borders at and between the official ports of entry.
