NASCAR heroes

Dale Earnhardt was one of NASCAR’s brightest heroes. His racing reputation was legendary--he would do anything to get to the checkered flag. Earnhardt was known for his trademark black Chevrolet Monte Carlo, while the CBP Air and Marine Operations (AMO) are known for their trademark CBP UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters and 39-foot Midnight Express interceptor boats.

In November 2004, NASCAR held the NEXTEL CUP season finale, the FORD 400, and was attended by 80,000 fans. CBP Miami Air and Marine Branch (MAMB), located on the Homestead Air Reserve Base Homestead, Fla., provided security along with the FBI, Homestead Police and track security who conducted periodic patrols of the access roads leading to the NASCAR track.

Prior to the race, CBP AMO officers opened up the static displays of the UH-60 Black Hawk and a 39-foot Midnight Express interceptor boat in the pit crew row (area where pit crews service the cars). Thousands of fans greeted the CBP AMO officers and learned more about CBP’s mission of protecting our nation’s borders. Several fans thanked the crews and stated "...you are the true stars and heroes keeping us safe so we can enjoy these types of races and other big events."

The race opened with country singer Trace Atkins singing the national anthem as he concluded, two CBP UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters conducted a fly-over to salute racing fans and America. A long time racing fan and racecar owner said, “That was one of the most awesome fly-overs I have ever seen!”

As long as there are threats of terrorism in the United States, CBP AMO officers will do everything in their power to detect intruders trying to breach our borders, either on land, air, or sea. CJ
