Yuma Agents Catch Child Molester Near Checkpoint

contacts for this news releaseYuma, Ariz. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol agents assigned to the Yuma Sector captured a man wanted by Norwalk, Calif., authorities for child molestation Sunday. At 3 p.m., a motorist alerted agents working at the checkpoint, located on Interstate 8 at milepost 62, to an individual exiting a vehicle and running. The citizen pointed out the vehicle when it approached the checkpoint and agents questioned the vehicle’s driver before allowing him to pass. Following up on the citizen’s report, agents later found footprints a short distance from the interstate and eventually located and apprehended an individual, identified as a Mexican national illegally in the U.S., about a half mile west of the checkpoint. The individual was transported to the Wellton Border Patrol station for processing, where a records check in the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System revealed the man was wanted by California authorities on a felony warrant for one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child. The Norwalk Sheriff’s Office was contacted and confirmed the warrant and the individual will be extradited.U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry.
