CBP Arrests Two Fugitives in the Caribbean, One a Military Deserter

St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at Cruz Bay St. John, USVI detained a 24-year-old male wanted for military desertion. The traveler was apprehended on Friday when attempting to enter the U.S. Virgin Islands from Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands.

The arrest of passenger Michael Doherty occurred when he was processed by CBP officers and they discovered that he had an outstanding arrest warrant. The warrant was confirmed and custody was transferred to agents for final processing.

Fajardo, Puerto Rico — On a separate instance, CBP officers at the Fajardo Airport arrested a 36- year-old male wanted for parole violation. Felipe Ramos was arrested on February 7, 2008 when arriving at Vieques, P.R. from St. Croix, USVI. During inspection, officers discovered that he had an outstanding arrest warrant from Tampa, Fla. Once arrest warrant was confirmed, passenger was turned over to agents for final processing.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection nationwide have arrested over 3,100 fugitives attempting to cross our borders. These apprehensions were the direct result of CBP’s increase use of names queries during primary inspections.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
