$2.4 Billion for Parks Benefits Historic Sagamore Hill

February 7, 2007

WASHINGTON - On February 5, President Bush announced $2.4 billion for park operations in the FY08 budget, the largest amount to date. Long Island’s historic Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay will receive $1.55 million, an $85,000 increase from FY06. This comes as part of the President’s National Parks Initiative, a program to enhance our National Parks system in the decade up to its 100th anniversary in 2016.

“Sagamore Hill is one of Long Island’s historic treasures,” said Rep. King. “I am pleased to see that the President realizes how important this landmark is, not just to the people of Long Island, but to all Americans.”

Sagamore Hill was the home of Theodore Roosevelt from 1885 until his death in 1919. The home, open for public visits, is furnished as it was during his life there. It is now a considered a national historic site, under the protection of the U.S. National Park Service.

“As the former home of our 26th President, this site is one of national significance. These funds will help ensure that it is preserved for the enjoyment of many generations to come.”

Congressman Peter King, now serving his eighth term in Congress, has a strong record of supporting conservation efforts. This month, he received the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA)’s 2006 National Congressional Award for his sustained support of public recreation and parks.
