CBP Detects Drugs Hidden Within Laptop, Exercise Equipment

contacts for this news releaseMayaguez, P.R. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a 39-year old male Wednesday for transporting narcotics from the Dominican Republic hidden in his laptop computer. During secondary inspection CBP officers noticed that the passenger was carrying a laptop that had been tampered with. The laptop was X-rayed and further examination disclosed six packages hidden in the computer. Contents of package field-tested positive for heroin. A total of over 378 grams were seized with a street value of approximately $25,000. The passenger arrived on board the Caribbean Express Ferry and is a citizen of Italy. Wednesday evening, in a separate instance, CBP officers assigned to the Port of Mayaguez also intercepted a package that arrived through express consignment from Trinidad. The package contained various types of exercise equipment. Package was X-rayed and 15 packages containing narcotics were retrieved. A total of 641 grams of cocaine, with an estimated street value of $11,538 was seized. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry.
