[ Alison - 3 - 06:12:54 ]
Hi- We couldn't join you live so we are sending our questions in early. Thank you for answering them.

[ MellonBank_Everett - 4 - 09:53:55 ]
Hi! There are about 50 boys here at Mellon Bank Everett who will be participating in Patricia's Chat today! We are going to submit some questions early as we have quite a few today!

[ Sandy/NASAChatHost - 5 - 09:55:39 ]
Welcome to Alison and MellonBank! We're thrilled you're here today!! Patricia will be joining us in about 10 minutes. It's fine if you want to submit your questions early. You will not see them in the main chat room just yet -- I will hold them in my moderator's queue until Patricia arrives and then will post three at a time so as not to inundate our expert! We look forward to chatting with you today :-)

[ Sandy/NASAChatHost - 7 - 10:04:50 ]

RE: [MellonBank_Everett] Hi! There are about 50 boys here at Mellon Bank Everett who will be participating in Patricia's Chat today! We are going to submit some questions early as we have quite a few today!
Hi everyone. I am in my apartment in Moscow after a day of work at the Russian Mission Control Center. Please send your questions....

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 13 - 10:08:23 ]
RE: [Jevic_Muteba/MellonBank] When you work do you speak Russian or English?
We use interpreters to translate for us when working with our Russian colleagues. Even though I do speak Russian, we train our interpreters to handle these technical conversations.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 14 - 10:08:51 ]
RE: [Jonathan_Muteba/Mellon] How many languages do you speak?
Only English and Russian.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 18 - 10:11:29 ]
RE: [Joel_Barnes/Mellon] Is it difficult to work in Moscow? What is it like?
After you get used to the language and culture differences, it's not difficult to work here. It doesn't take long to get used to the differences. Work here can be hectic sometimes. Since we are 9 hours ahead of our coworkers in Houston, we sometimes work late into the night.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 19 - 10:13:16 ]
RE: [Mark_Young/Mellon] What countries are involved in the building of the space station? Can someone live there?
The U.S., Canada, Russia, Japan and the 14 countries of the European Space Agency.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 21 - 10:14:27 ]
RE: [Chris_Salton/Mellon] What does MIR stand for?
Mir is actually a Russian word that means both world and peace.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 22 - 10:16:01 ]
RE: [Chris_Despres/Mellon] If you could visit a planet, which one would you like to visit?
I think I would pick Mars because it will be the first one we will reach with astronauts.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 26 - 10:21:36 ]
RE: [Timothy_Melle/Mellon] How tall is a rocketship and how much fuel is used on a mission?
This is a difficult question to answer. Rocketships come in many different sizes and the amount of fuel you use depends on how high the rocket goes and how much it weighs when it is launched. The Shuttle with its boosters and fuel weighs 4.5 million pounds. The height is 184 feet at launch.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 27 - 10:22:35 ]
RE: [Ron_Nix/Mellon] Do you have any hobbies?
In Houston I ride horses for my hobby. In Moscow I spend my free time going to museums.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 28 - 10:24:12 ]
RE: [Dennis_Yebba/Mellon] Were there ever any serious emergencies on the MIR? If so, could you explain what they were?
There were two incidents on Mir during the joint program which were serious. One was a fire that was quickly put out and the other was a collision of the resupply ship with the station.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 31 - 10:27:24 ]
RE: [Dante_Montgomery/Mellon] What is a payload operation? What do OP Leaders do?
Payload operations is planning and carrying out the experiments on the spaceflights. We fly many different types of experiments on the Shuttle and will be flying many more on the International Space Station. Ops Leads, while we are building the station, mainly help the communication between the two flight control teams. When the crew remains onboard the ISS, the Ops Leads will help plan the activities for the crew's daily work.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 32 - 10:29:15 ]
RE: [DeAndre_Montgomery/Mellon] What made you decide to get a degree in Industrial Engineering
At Auburn, the Industrial Engineering degree covered several types of engineering studies. This systems type of degree appealed to me more than specializing in one type.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 33 - 10:32:00 ]
RE: [Dariyus_Harding/Mellon] Patricia - Do you like your job? Why did you choose to do it?
I love my job....I can't think of anything else I had rather do! I chose the particular job I'm in because I wanted to work with our International Partners. However, my career at NASA was chosen from the time I started college. I never wanted to work for anyone else.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 38 - 10:35:49 ]
RE: [Ryan_Ruggiero/Mellon] How does it feel to live the life in Russia? What are some cultural differences?
Living in Moscow is very interesting. It is a huge city very rich in history. The cultural differences are mainly in the way we approach interactions with others. Russians are very reserved until you get to know them. Americans tend to be much more friendly right up front.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 39 - 10:39:49 ]
RE: [Sean_Mayne/Mellon] What is the average salary of an Astronaut? Is there a range?
They start out at an average senior engineer level salary and progress to an average senior management salary level. They are on a government pay scale which varies from year to year. Some astronauts are still in the military and are paid by their military branch.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 40 - 10:40:52 ]
RE: [Jason_Butler/Mellon] How long does it take for a rocketship to reach space from the Earth?
The Space Shuttle takes about 8 minutes to reach orbit.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 45 - 10:42:10 ]
RE: [Anthony_Nalen/Mellon] Have you ever been to Everett, Massachusetts?
The only city I have been to in Massachusetts is Boston.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 46 - 10:43:21 ]
RE: [Jared_Carrabis/Mellon] What has the weather been like in Moscow?
It has been nice but a little cold. During the day it has been in the 50s. But today it is raining and turning colder. They are predicting snow by this weekend.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 47 - 10:45:13 ]
RE: [Justin_DeRosa/Mellon] How does the time difference affect your life?
Good question. It's nearly 10pm here and I'm having this chat with you! We tend to work much longer hours to cover the work days of people here in Moscow and in Houston.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 48 - 10:47:36 ]
RE: [John_Woodward/Mellon] How do the people get the rocket to the launch site?
The Russians use a train. We use a special vehicle called the "Crawler" to transport the Shuttle out to the launch pad. It takes about 8 hours to get the Shuttle from the assembly building to the launch pad.

[ Sandy/NASAChatHost - 50 - 10:48:24 ]
EVERYONE: There are about 10 minutes left in our chat with Patricia today...

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 51 - 10:49:14 ]
RE: [Matthew_Stasio/Mellon] Are there any people getting ready to go into outerspace within the next 5 months?
Currently, there are two cosmonauts on Mir. Next week (May 18th), NASA is sending 6 astronauts and 1 cosmonaut to visit the International Space Station.

[ Sandy/NASAChatHost - 52 - 10:49:23 ]
EVERYONE: At the end of today's chat, please let us know how we did by filling out a short survey at -- http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/qchats/qchat-surveys -- Thank you!

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 57 - 10:51:07 ]
RE: [Garrett] Has there been any discussion or thought about having gravity on the space station?
Actually, we will go to the Space Station to perform experiments without the effects of gravity.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 58 - 10:52:54 ]
RE: [Sam/Springman] How will NASA take water into space, and how will water be used and recycled?
We actually generate water on-board the Shuttle through the process of creating electricity. Water is a by-product of this process. We collect the water in plastic containers and store it on the Station. There will be a machine to recycle waste water on-board the Station as well.

[ Springman - 59 - 10:55:32 ]
Before it gets too late, we want to say thank you for answering our questions! Signed, The Quest Team at Springman Middle School (Glenview, IL)

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 60 - 10:55:43 ]
RE: [Garrett/Springman] What kinds of new technology will be on the space station?
Scientists will be developing processes for designing pharmaceuticals, developing new materials and better understanding processes within the human body.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 61 - 10:56:13 ]
RE: [Sean_Mayne/Mellon] How long did you have to go to school?
I attended 4 years of college after high school.

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 62 - 10:56:36 ]
RE: [Jevic_Muteba/Mellon] Where did you used to live before Russia?
Houston, Texas.

[ Sandy/NASAChatHost - 63 - 10:56:42 ]
EVERYONE: Patricia will answer the last few questions posted in the chatroom and then we have to let her get to bed -- remember Moscow is 11 hours ahead of Pacific time!

[ PatriciaMoore/RussianMissionControl - 64 - 10:57:10 ]
RE: [Mike_Torici/Mellon] Do the Russians treat you any differently because you are an American?
They did at first. Now they treat me like a friend.

[ Springman - 65 - 10:58:58 ]
Goodnight!

[ Sandy/NASAChatHost - 66 - 11:00:28 ]
