EX Hydrae = 4U1228-29

A finding chart for EX Hya

SkyView image of EX Hya (see important notes).

Position:
  • Equatorial: 12h52m24.47s, -29d14m57.5s (J2000)
  • Galactic: l=303.19, b=+33.62
Finding Chart:
Schwartz et al (1979)
Brightness:
V~13 in quiescence, 9.5 at peak of outbursts; fx (2-10 keV)~8.7x10^(-11) ergs/cm/cm/s (ASCA)
Periods:
  • Orbital: 0.068233846 d = 1.637612394 hr= 5895.4s, see in optical and X-rays
    TDB(eclipse)=2437699.94179 + 0.068233846 E
    (Hellier & Sproats 1992) with 17.5yr cycle (?)
    O-C=-0.00027 + 0.00028sin[360(E/93500)+7]
  • Spin: 0.046546504d = 67.02696576 min = 4021.617946s, seen in optical photometry, optical spectroscopy and X-rays.
    TDB(max)= 2437699.8914(5)+0.046546504(9)E-7.9(4)x10^{-13}E^2
    (Hellier & Sproats 1992)
  • Others: Sideband(s) seen only during outbursts.
Inclination:
~77 deg (partial eclipse)
Distance:
65+-11 pc (Eisenbart et al 2002)

A rather atypical IP, in terms of spin and orbital periods. Evolutionary scenario and current accretion mode are both being debated. Although the the accretion curtain model was first developed for this system, and later successfully applied to other IPs, it does not seem to be applicable to EX Hya at all.
