(12/07/2007)1969 Ridge RoadChamplain, NY 12919Phone: (518) 298-2531History and Area of ResponsibilityThe original Border Patrol Station in this area was established at Rouses Point, New York, July 1, 1924, with a complement of three officers. The original area of responsibility was Grand Isle County, Vermont; Clinton County, New York, and the portion of Franklin County, New York, east of Fort Covington. No specific depth of the area was set forth; however, where necessary, officers worked as far as 100 miles south of the border. During this early period, stations were also established at Chestertown, Ticonderoga, Chateaugay, and Mooers, New York, with a complement of two or three officers each. With the closing of the other Border Patrol stations, disbanding of the Customs Patrol, and the rise in international travel, the officer strength has steadily increased. The Massena Station is responsible for 38 miles of International Border with Canada, 33 miles of which consists of the St Lawrence Seaway, and 5 miles of which is the first section of land border east of the Great Lakes. This five mile section also comprises the St. Regis Mohawk Native American Indian Reservation. |
