House Approves Funding for Grant County Housing Project

July 25, 2007 -- Congressman Alan B. Mollohan has placed $100,000 in a spending bill for an affordable housing project in Grant County.

Mollohan, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, included the funding in the $104 billion fiscal year 2008 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill.  The measure passed in the House by a vote of 268-153 on Tuesday.

“Grant County, like many areas throughout northern West Virginia, has a growing need for affordable, quality housing.  This year’s funding will help meet this demand,” Mollohan said.

Specifically, the monies will be used by the Grant County Housing Authority for streetscape improvements and construction of ADA-accessible entrances to 24 moderate income housing units.  The housing project is located along Johnson Run Road in Petersburg.

“This funding is particularly important in a time when the Department of Housing and Urban Development reports that there is a continuing nationwide shortage of affordable housing.  The impact is felt by individuals in rural areas across the First Congressional District as they bear the burden of increased housing costs on a limited or fixed income,” Mollohan said.  “It is my hope that this funding will help alleviate some of those concerns for individuals in Grant County.”

Dennis Rogers of the Grant County Housing Authority said, “Without this money provided by Congressman Mollohan, we would have difficulty completing this project.”

The Senate will now consider the measure before sending it to the President for his signature.
