contacts for this news release

Boundary, Wash. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection is anticipating the closure of Canada’s Waneta Bridge on Highway 22A southeast of Trail, British Columbia beginning March 31st and reopening on or before June 30th. This closure will permit the B.C. Ministry of Transportation to carry out a $1.6 million restoration of the structural capacity of the bridge by replacing deteriorating decking, railings and upgrading the floor beams. The Waneta Bridge was originally built in 1893 as a railway bridge and continues in service as is the oldest operational highway bridge in British Columbia.

Motorists who normally enter and exit the United States through the Boundary port of entry are advised that the port will be closed during this period and to use the Frontier port of entry. The Frontier port is located on State Highway 25 locally known as Little Sheep Creek Road and is open 24 hours day, 7 days a week.

The Highway 22A crosses over the Pend Oreille River on the Waneta Bridge just north of the border then connects with Highway 251 in Washington State.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
