Abstract This paper describes the techniques used in emergency retrofit of the swing span truss of the Trinity River Railroad Bridge after the loss of the center pivot pier. On December 31, 1991, the masonry pivot pier was carried away by flood waters, thus converting the two span swing unit into a single simple span of 225 ft. An emergency retrofit plan was conceived and executed to restore the live load capacity. Design investigations and detail sketches were completed by January 6, bids were taken on January 10 and retrofit work started on January 13. H-Pile and WF Sections, using material immediately available, were field-welded to the top and bottom chords. All work was completed and the bridge returned to service on January 31, 1992.
