CBP's Weekend Operations At Tucson-Area Ports Result in 14 Arrests for Attempted Narcotics Smuggling

Tucson, Ariz. — During a busy Presidents’ Day weekend, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at ports of entry in Arizona stopped 14 attempts to smuggle narcotics into the U.S., arresting 14 people and seizing more than 800 pounds of illicit drugs.

CBP officers at the DeConcini port of entry in Nogales arrested a 25-year-old woman from Nogales, Sonora Feb. 16 after finding 38 pounds of marijuana hidden inside the back seat of a 1996 Buick Regal.

That afternoon, officers at the land border port arrested a 50-year-old woman from Culiacan, Sinaloa after finding 28 pounds of cocaine hidden in the front fenders of a 1974 Plymouth sedan.

Also in the afternoon of Feb. 16, officers at the Morley pedestrian entrance at the Nogales port of entry arrested a 15-year-old male from Nogales, Sonora after finding more than a pound of marijuana strapped to his back.

The next morning, officers at the DeConcini port of entry arrested a 21-year-old woman from Nogales, Ariz. after finding more than 104 pounds of cocaine hidden inside the backseat of a 1996 Buick Regal.

Later that morning, officers at the Douglas port of entry arrested a 28-year-old woman from Huachuca City, Ariz. after finding 348 pounds of marijuana inside the trunk of a 2001 Dodge Intrepid.

During the afternoon of Feb. 17, officers at the Mariposa port of entry in Nogales arrested a 60-year-old man from Hermosillo, Sonora after finding almost 50 pounds of cocaine hidden inside a 2006 Chevy pickup.

The same day officers at the Douglas port of entry arrested an 18-year-old woman from Agua Prieta, Sonora after finding 17 pounds of marijuana hidden inside the dashboard of a 1991 Mitsubishi Mirage.

During the morning of Feb. 18, officers at the DeConcini port of entry in Nogales arrested a 50-year-old man from San Bernardino, Calif. after finding almost 22 pounds of marijuana hidden inside a cooler he was bringing on a bus from Mexico.

During the afternoon of the 18th, officers at the Mariposa port of entry in Nogales arrested a 36-year-old woman from Nogales, Sonora after finding 34 pounds of marijuana hidden inside the gas tank of a 1995 Dodge pickup.

That evening, officers at the DeConcini port arrested a 25-year-old man from Nogales, Sonora after finding more than 26 pounds of cocaine hidden in the spare tire of a 1986 Ford F150.

Monday morning, officers at the Douglas port of entry arrested a 25-year-old man from Agua Prieta, Sonora after finding almost 24 pounds of marijuana hidden inside the spare tire of a Ford pickup.

Monday afternoon, officers at the Douglas port of entry arrested a 30-year-old man from Agua Prieta, Sonora after finding 46 pounds of marijuana hidden inside a 1985 Dodge Diplomat.

Also in the afternoon Feb. 19, officers at the Morley pedestrian entrance at the Nogales port of entry arrested a 19-year-old woman from Nogales, Sonora after finding more than three pounds of methamphetamines inside a bag she was carrying.

During the evening of the 19th, officers at the Douglas port of entry arrested a 16-year-old boy from Douglas, Arizona after finding more than 103 pounds of marijuana hidden inside a compartment built into the bed of a 1991 Nissan pickup.

In addition during last weekend, CBP officers at all the ports of entry in Arizona apprehended 10 fugitives and CBP agriculture specialists stopped 11 attempts to smuggle prohibited agricultural items into the country.

Narcotic seized during these 14 arrests was 633 pounds of marijuana, 209 pounds of cocaine and three pounds of methamphetamines.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
