Customs and Border Protection Has Five Drug Seizures In Five Days At The Detroit Border Crossings

Detroit, MI– U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers (CBPO) from the Port of Detroit’s three border facilities, Fort Street Cargo Facility, the Ambassador Bridge, and the Detroit Canada Tunnel were kept busy during the five-day period of July 18th to July 23rd. In addition to an influx of weekend travelers returning from Canada they also dealt with drug smuggling and arrest warrants.

On July 18, 2006, a sixteen-year-old Canadian citizen attempted to bring 2.4 kilos of ecstasy (approx 8,000+ pills) through the Detroit Canada Tunnel concealed on her body.

On July 19, 2006, a fifty-nine year old Canadian citizen attempted to bring 2.1 grams of cocaine through the Detroit Canada Tunnel concealed in his vehicle.

On July 20, 2006, a thirty-seven year old United States citizen attempted to bring 2.2 kilos of Ecstasy (approx 8,000 pills) across the Ambassador Bridge concealed on his body.

On July 22, 2006, a twenty-three year old Iraqi citizen, permanent resident of US, attempted to bring 2.45 kilos of ecstasy (approx 8,000+ pills) through the Detroit Canada Tunnel.

On July 23, 2006, a twenty-eight year old Canadian citizen, born in India, attempted to bring 61 kilos of Marijuana and 63 kilos of ecstasy (approx 200,000 pills) through the Fort Street Cargo Facility.

In addition to the 2.1 grams of cocaine, 61 kilos of marijuana, and 70+ kilos of ecstasy that CBP officers kept from entering our communities, they also encounter thirteen individuals who were discovered to have warrants (local 10, state 1 and federal 2) for their arrest for a variety of offenses. These individuals were detained at the border crossings and turned over to the appropriate law enforcement agencies that had issued the warrants.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the protection of our nation’s borders. CBP unified Customs, Immigration, Agriculture Inspectors, and the Border Patrol into one border agency for the United States.
