Abstract During 2003-2004, two tests were performed at the VTI test facility in Sweden: SE05 (Unbound base material test) and SE06 (Structural design test). The purpose of SE05 was to examine the deformation behavior of two different unbound base materials simultaneously. One half of the test site was constructed using a base layer of natural granular material, while the other half used a base layer of crushed rock aggregate. SE06 involved a third test in a series of structural design tests with stepwise higher bearing capacity. Results from SE05 found that the surface rut depth propagation during the accelerated load test was greater on the crushed rock aggregate structure, and especially so in wet conditions. Measurements from SE06 (along with the earlier two tests), showed that during the gradual increase of bearing capacity, a fairly strong correlation occurred between the rut depth propagation in dry conditions and surface deflections.
