CBP Announces Online Method for Meeting SENTRI Vehicle Requirements
SENTRI Members Reminded to Update Contact Information

(Friday, October 31, 2008)

contacts for this news release

Washington – U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced current Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection members can now register their vehicle’s license plate with CBP online.

All members must register or update their current license plate by going to the CBP Global Online Enrollment System Web site. ( GOES ) Additionally, current SENTRI members are requested to verify and update their contact information at the same site.

Only one SENTRI member is permitted to maintain the license plate information of a SENTRI vehicle. That member must be the person who registered the vehicle with SENTRI, presented it to CBP for enrollment inspection, and was present when CBP affixed the transponder to the vehicle.

If the person who enrolled a vehicle is no longer a SENTRI member, another member must register the vehicle before the vehicle is used in any SENTRI lane. The member can register the vehicle by selecting the “Add Vehicle” function in GOES. As with any vehicle enrollment, there is a $42 fee, the vehicle must be re-inspected, and a new transponder issued.

SENTRI members should update their vehicle’s license plate immediately in Nogales, Ariz., no later than October 2008; Brownsville, Texas, no later than December 2008; Otay Mesa, San Ysidro and Calexico, Calif., no later than January 2009; El Paso, Hidalgo and Laredo, Texas, no later than February 2009 and keep them current and updated.

SENTRI is a land-border crossing program that provides expedited CBP processing for pre-approved, low-risk travelers along the U.S./Mexico border.

The SENTRI program was first implemented at Otay Mesa, Calif. in 1995, and has grown to include 16 lanes at the nine largest ports of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border including San Ysidro, Calif.; Calexico, Calif.; Nogales, Ariz.; two crossings in El Paso, Texas; and the Texas ports of Laredo, Hidalgo and Brownsville. More than 180,000 travelers from both sides of the border are currently registered in the SENTRI program.

A similar program called NEXUS serves citizens of the U.S. and Canada on the northern border.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
