Commissioner's Letter: CBP & ICE Make Joint Donation to Samaritan's Feet
(01/24/2008)Rev. Emmanuel OhonmePresidentSamaritan’s FeetPost Office Box 78992 Charlotte, North Carolina 28271Dear Mr. Ohonme:We take great pleasure in announcing that both U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will donate 10,000 pairs of shoes to Samaritan’s Feet. Our agencies under the Department of Homeland Security share a unique but collaborative mission to protect the Nation from the entry of terrorists and their weapons, stop illicit cross border activities, and also enforce U.S. trade and intellectual property laws. All 10,000 pairs of shoes were seized at American ports of entry for violations of U.S. trademark laws. The holder of the legitimate trademark has agreed to allow us to make this donation rather than destroy the shoes. We are very pleased that the efforts of CBP and ICE officers and agents have not only stopped these goods from being distributed in the United States illegally, but have made it possible for the people served by your organization to benefit. We think this event is a great way to showcase the work of the men and women of our two frontline agencies and help us put “boots on the ground” as we recruit for the many career opportunities defending our Nation’s borders. IUPUI Coach Ron Hunter’s barefoot coaching, as reported on ESPN’s Mike & Mike show, sparked our interest and the selfless goals of your organization, Samaritan’s Feet have inspired this donation. Thank you for allowing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to be a part of such an important endeavor. Sincerely,W. Ralph BashamCommissionerU.S. Customs and Border ProtectionJulie L.
