Abstract Walking has been endorsed as being healthful and is being promoted by entities such as the American Medical Association. At the same time, transit agencies across the U.S. are taking up the cause of encouraging walking with the hope that more housing and shopping will be located in close proximity to transit stations in an effort to increase ridership and rejuvenate surrounding communities. This article looks at this trend, citing examples of transit agencies making stations more pedestrian-friendly in New Jersey, Atlanta, and the San Francisco Bay region.
