[ Andrea/Ames - 0 - 13:26:40 ]
Welcome to the chat room for the Mars Education Exploration event! Feel free to ask questions. They will be presented to Don at the end of this session.

[ Marc/California - 1 - 15:01:28 ]
Hello. Please introduce yourself at his time.

[ Marc/California - 2 - 15:01:47 ]
I will be feeding your ideas back to Don during the broadcast

[ Marc/California - 3 - 15:09:59 ]
If you are in the chat room, please introduce yourself so Don has an opportunity to find our who is participating.

[ Marc/California - 4 - 15:17:18 ]
Did anyone else try the activity Don just did?

[ Shirley - 5 - 15:18:42 ]
Teach adults.

[ Marc/California - 6 - 15:21:26 ]
Hi Shirley. Please elaborate. What do you mean by "teach adults". Don't presentation is geared towards adult teachers to help them learn about some lessons they could use with students

[ Marc/California - 7 - 15:22:14 ]
Oops. I meant to say "Don's presentation", not "Don't presentation".

[ Marc/California - 8 - 15:26:34 ]
Hi Shirley. Are you still there? Can you please say where you are observing from?

[ jason - 9 - 15:41:03 ]
how long do you recommend simulating this. Do measurements change in the next ten minutes?

[ Shirley - 10 - 15:43:01 ]
Sorry, computer crashed and had to reboot. I'm in the adult eduction division of PBS in Alexandria, Va.

[ Marc/California - 11 - 15:43:37 ]
Hi Jason, Please let us know where you are writing from.

[ Marc/California - 12 - 15:45:43 ]
Shirley Thanks so much for the information. I think this format does work much better if we get some feedback. So I am grateful for you sticking with us after the crash.

[ Eureka - 13 - 15:48:33 ]
Question concerning the previous topic... When entering the gravatational field of Mars will the people on board tend to pass out much like when you rose people up to a 45degree angle? And will the reduced gravity on Mars make a difference in this...?

[ jason - 14 - 15:49:13 ]
how do we obtain a transcript of this presentation

[ Shirley - 15 - 15:49:51 ]
The video is not coming through. I see only a black screen the word "PLAY" in the top left corner.

[ Marc/California - 16 - 15:50:02 ]
Jason. You should try the experiment yourself. I was amazed at how much my calf shrank in just 10 minutes

[ jason - 17 - 15:50:50 ]
I am the education program manager of the United States Space Foundation in Colorado Springs, CO.

[ Marc/California - 18 - 15:51:15 ]
Eureka. I will ask Don your question at a convenient breaking point (right after this life experiment).

[ Marc/California - 19 - 15:52:54 ]
Hi Jason. Thanks for the introduction. We don't have any plans to prepare a transcript. At this point we are on a pretty low budget and we don't have money for transcription. How would a transcript be helpful?

[ jason - 20 - 15:55:07 ]
there is plenty of information given besides the activies that teachers will find useful to their students. are you videotaping the presentation that will be available to the ERC's. We are the Colorado ERC.

[ Marc/California - 22 - 15:57:39 ]
Shirley. Did the tape ever come through or did it continue to just have the PLAY sign...I know it started that way.

[ Marc/California - 23 - 15:59:07 ]
Jason. The archive of this presentation will certainly be placed online. So folks could get the full content by viewing the presentation.

[ Marc/California - 24 - 15:59:47 ]
Hello Eureka. Where are you located?

[ jason - 25 - 15:59:57 ]
thanks.

[ Shirley - 26 - 16:01:31 ]
The black screen went away when Don started talking again. After about 5 seconds of Don talking, the video played without sound for about 30 seconds. Then Don reappeared.

[ Eureka - 27 - 16:03:08 ]
Monterey, CA. (Student at Defence Language Institute - USAF)

[ Marc/California - 28 - 16:04:16 ]
Please let me know how you found out abotu today's broadcast?

[ Andrea - 29 - 16:04:34 ]
We are having trouble hearing Marc

[ Marc/California - 30 - 16:05:23 ]
Andrea. Thanks for the feedback. I will go closer to the microphone next time I speak.

[ Marc/California - 31 - 16:06:37 ]
Black, shiny, angular

[ Marc/California - 32 - 16:07:23 ]
If you have a rock, please share a description now

[ Shirley - 33 - 16:08:21 ]
Reddish brown with a rough surface. Some areas are black.

[ Andrea - 34 - 16:08:37 ]
Rough, pink

[ Eureka - 35 - 16:09:24 ]
Marc: I found out about the brodcast via nasa's brodcasting page.

[ Marc/California - 36 - 16:09:26 ]
I have another one. Brown, light in weight, rounded, looks like air holes throughout

[ Eileen - 37 - 16:10:21 ]
My rock is very lightweight, dark, earthy looking, and appears to be porous.

[ Marc/California - 38 - 16:11:54 ]
Hi Eileen. Where are you from?

[ Marc/California - 39 - 16:12:42 ]
Andrea. How was the volume on my more recent speaking?

[ Eileen - 40 - 16:16:02 ]
Marc I'm Eileen Bendixsen from the Live From Mars project and one of your aquarium partners in New Orleans. My system is really slow so I'm having trouble communicating, but I'm picking up most of what you have.

[ Andrea - 41 - 16:16:43 ]
Better - thanks.

[ Marc/California - 42 - 16:17:26 ]
Hi Eileen. I'm so glad you made it. I remember our jaunt to the aquarium. Were you from New Jersey? Am I remembering that right?

[ Marc/California - 43 - 16:20:14 ]
Hi Eureka. You said "you found out about the brodcast via nasa's brodcasting page." Was that the schedule page under LTC or another place?

[ Eureka - 44 - 16:20:39 ]
Marc: That was it.

[ Shirley - 45 - 16:22:09 ]
This time the video played. I got the first screen of a field of rocks. I heard all of the audio, but there was no more video -- just a single screen of rocks.

[ Marc/California - 46 - 16:22:15 ]
Shirley or others, did the sound come through on the last tape?

[ Eureka - 47 - 16:23:08 ]
I got the sound, but like Shirley - there was only one frame of video.

[ Marc/California - 48 - 16:24:30 ]
Hi Shirley. Thanks for the feedback. We are still trying to get our act together in terms of feeding the tape. Your feedback is really helpful.

[ Andrea - 49 - 16:24:52 ]
For me on the last tape (I am only listening to the audio) the audio came through

[ Marc/California - 50 - 16:26:25 ]
Hi Shirley, Jason, Eileeen. Are you still there? If so, please let me know how you found out about this event. Also, do you think it is realistic that a teacher with the appropriate technology could actually learn through a mechanism like this?

[ Shirley - 51 - 16:26:33 ]
I'm using the RealPlayer Plus to view the video -- and receiving at 19 Kbps.

[ Andrea - 52 - 16:26:49 ]
So will the majority of rocks collected in the US look like there has been volcanic acitivty in the region?

[ Marc/California - 53 - 16:28:15 ]
Shirley, how was the video. Were you able to make out any of the details on the closeups of the life activity, for example?

[ Shirley - 54 - 16:28:29 ]
We heard about this from TV station WHRO. Yes, this could work very well as a teaching mechanism. In fact we plan to use something like this for instruction.

[ Andrea - 55 - 16:30:03 ]
Shirley - what will be the content of the instruction?

[ Don/California - 56 - 16:30:24 ]
Hi, Andrea - Nope. Actually, in a large sample, one would expect a great variety of rock-forming processes to be revealed. But one would expect to find volcanic rocks in many areas of the US. If we had students from river or ocean country, probably there would be smooth rocks, eg. How did we look?

[ Shirley - 57 - 16:30:34 ]
There wasn't enough detail on the samples to tell them apart. They all looked like gray-brown beakers. It was a little better when the camera focused on the sample for a few seconds after a closeup.

[ Don/California - 58 - 16:31:56 ]
Thanks, Shirley. Good feedback.

[ Andrea - 59 - 16:32:59 ]
Don, I only watched the "It's Alive" portion and listened to the rock activity -- I live by the ocean I could have just as easliy selected a round rock from my collection... I was just curious (the rock I selected was found in the desert close to the Grand Canyon...)

[ Shirley - 60 - 16:33:30 ]
Andrea -- we would like to work with community colleges, adult education centers, and others to do various types of instruction. We are currently working with the University of Delaware to pilot a Web-based course entitled "Internet Literacy".

[ Andrea - 61 - 16:34:05 ]
Shirely - do you have a url for the course?

[ Don/California - 62 - 16:34:49 ]
Grand Canyon? Actually, major volcanic activity not too far away - Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff are volcanic. Ranger Don

[ Andrea - 63 - 16:35:21 ]
Thank you - Ranger Don -

[ Shirley - 64 - 16:35:52 ]
Andrea -- go to http://www.udel.edu/serf/ for background info on the course.

[ Andrea - 65 - 16:37:20 ]
Thanks - the Quest Project will also offer a course in through San Francisco State Univ. -- targeted to K-12 teachers: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/ltc/teach I will check out the site!

[ Andrea - 66 - 16:40:03 ]
Don - thanks!

[ Shirley - 67 - 16:40:41 ]
Andrea -- thanks for sharing this. I've got to go now, but you can reach me -- Shirley Davis -- at als@pbs.org -- our Web site is www.pbs.org/als

[ Andrea - 68 - 16:41:30 ]
Shirley -- I will do that!

[ Don/California - 69 - 16:41:56 ]
Thanks to you, Andrea, for all your fine work. This was FUN. Now go walk that beach. Thanks to all the rest of you for joining in. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Good Chanukah, etc., to all Signing off, into real space.
