- Publication_Information:
-
- Publication_Place: Morgantown, WV
- Publisher: Natural Resource Analysis Center
- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
Locations of potential habitat for these species
were predicted from a combination of wildlife
habitat association information, general range
limits, and a map of potential habitat locations.
Predictions were performed using Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) processes.
- Purpose:
-
The purpose of Gap Analysis is to analyze the
distribution and conservation status of elements
of biological diversity in West Virginia.
Specific elements analyzed by WV-GAP include
butterfly, amphibian, reptile, bird, and mammal
species.

The accuracy of these predicted habitats is highly
influenced by the source datasets used in the
modeling process used to create these map layers.
Source datasets included a species-habitat
relationship database based on literature
references and range maps based on literature
review and observation databases from various
sources. Accuracy assessment of these modeling
results was conducted by comparision of reference
species checklists for conservation areas
(National Wildlife Refuges, etc.) with the
predicted habitat modeling results. Accuracy
assessment is presented and discussed in detail in
the WV-GAP final report document.

Range limits and habitat relationships are

A habitat map of land cover types was created
using methods described in the WV-GAP final
report. A database of habitat relationships for
each species and land cover type was created from
regional literature references. For each species,
predicted distributions were modeled in a GIS by
selecting all appropriate habitat locations, then
further limiting these locations to those within
the species' known range limits. The predicted
distributions were generalized to 90x90m grid
cells coded with 0 (absence or no data) and 1
(presence).
