On the chilly, dark evening of February 20, Sean Kannard, a TSO at Tulsa International Airport, was headed home from work on his motorcycle when he passed a police officer fighting with another man.

He immediately turned around to go back and help the officer. When Kannard arrived, the suspect started to walk from the scene.

But Officer Carl Small, who had been badly injured in the fight, pursued his assailant as backup law enforcement arrived. Small, who had responded to a vandalism call, managed to apprehended the man and responding officers took custody of the 230-pound, 6-foot-4 offender.

Kannard, after helping Small to his police car, drew on his military experience and first aid training to check the officer for shock. He talked to Small to help keep him conscious until he could get medical treatment.

Not only did Small credit Kannard with saving his life, but it turned out that the assailant was an ex-convict and non-registered sex offender.
