Original Document: After switching from round aluminum posts due to their being able to be rotated easily by vandals, and increasing costs (in the '70's) I went to 3-pound-per-foot galvanized U-channels, directly driven (in mostly rural/ suburban earth vs. concrete), with 2 45-degree angular angle below-surface level anchor brackets. I used vandal resistant bolt-thru caps and crosses with extruded (dog bone) blanks. I and my predecessor did use some square galvanized posts, punched on 1" centers for their entire length, for some other signage but I found that the galvanization wore off after a few years, especially around the holes. Unpunched square posts would probably work better, aesthetically. I suggest you look at comparative initial and lifecycle costs of the various post types and any vandal-proofing or other hardware for the various assembly styles. Let us know your decision and successes.
