Professional Experience

Research Specialist (Junior and Associate titles) for Professor William J. Oswald, Principal Investigator at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (2001-Present) and at the Environmental Engineering & Health Sciences Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley (1992 to 2001). Participated in the following:

  • Design, construction oversight, and operation of six innovative pilot treatment systems for municipal and agricultural wastewaters.
  • Development and execution of research plans for multi-year projects. Research sponsors have been both corporate and governmental (e.g., U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, California Energy Commission, U.S. EPA, and the CALFED Bay-Delta Program).

Laboratory Management

Supervised up to 10 laboratory technicians and students conducting water quality analyses. Responsible for the QA/QC program in Professor Oswald’s laboratory. This laboratory passed two 6-week inter-laboratory quality control challenges conducted in collaboration with the U.S. EPA Region IX Laboratory during 1999-2000.

Analytical experience: selenium, TOC, N, P, BOD, multiple tube fermentations and microplate methods, cell enumeration, AA, ion chromatography, chemostat and batch experiments with aerobic and anaerobic cultures, algal growth potential, X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy.

Field Projects

Participated in:

The design and execution of large-scale field experiments, most recently at the Panoche Drainage District Algal-Bacterial Selenium Removal Facility.

Process development and pilot testing of wastewater treatment systems using technologies such as reverse osmosis, dissolved air flotation, sedimentation, rapid and slow sand filtration, diatomaceous earth filtration, biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal, methanogenesis, and mass culture of microalgae.

Energy audits at three wastewater treatment facilities and numerous projects involving the piloting of biological, chemical, and physical treatment technologies.

Design and installation of a remote real-time monitoring and data logging system, and development of surface and subsurface biogas sampling apparatus.

 

Project Advising

Served as the project advisor in Professor Oswald’s group for Environmental Science undergraduates conducting senior thesis work and for other student volunteers. Has advised at least 65 undergraduates since 1989. Served on California Department of Water Resources In-Valley Drainage Management Committee, 2001.

 

International Experience

Participated in project development, planning, or design of wastewater treatment projects in Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Ethiopia, South Africa, India, and Australia in collaboration with local agencies and companies and U.S. agencies (U.S. AID and U.S.-Asia Environment Program).
