The Watch Your Car program is designed as a cooperative initiative among States, local governments, and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). |
Abstract:
|
The National Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention Act of 1994 authorized the U.S. Attorney General to develop a national voluntary car theft prevention program. Decals are voluntarily displayed on the vehicles alerting police officers that the vehicle is not normally driven during certain hours. The program provides decals for motor vehicle owners to voluntarily display on their vehicles to alert police that the vehicle is not normally driven between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. Research has shown that a significant number of vehicles are stolen in the early morning hours when their owners are asleep. A second decal can be displayed to indicate that the vehicle is not normally driven across international borders or in the proximity of ports of entry. |
