Seismicity Report for Northern California, the Nation, and the World for the week of December 18 - 23, 1997 Stephen R. Walter U.S. Geological Survey 345 Middlefield Rd. Next week's report will also be compiled one day early but will cover the seven-day period from December 24 - 30. San Francisco Bay Area During the six-day period ending at midnight on Wednesday, December 23, 1997 the U.S. Geological Survey office in Menlo Park recorded only nine earthquakes of magnitude one (M1) and greater within the San Francisco Bay area shown in Figure 1. None were as large as M2.0. This total compares to 14 earthquakes during the prior seven-day period (December 11 - 17), only one of which was as large as M2. Northern & Central California For the second week in a row the largest earthquake in the state occurred near the triple-junction of the Pacific, North American, and Gorda plates. This M4.4 earthquake occurred last Thursday afternoon about ten miles west of Petrolia and was felt from Honeydew north to Arcata (#4/2). It was followed by a dozen aftershocks as large as M2.0, two of which were as large as M3.0. Coincident with this activity, a second cluster of small quakes occurred farther offshore along the Mendocino fracture zone (#3/2). This cluster began with a M3.0 event just two hours before the M4.4 event and was followed by a pair of M2 shocks over the next four days that were also located along the fracture zone. The only other activity in the area was a 24-km-deep subduction earthquake whose epicenter was about 15 miles northwest of Hayfork (#9/2). Central California remained relatively quiet with pairs of M2's near the Pinnacles National Monument (#2/2) and northeast of the San Ardo area (#1/2). Activity in the eastern Sierra Nevada was limited to trios of M2's northeast of the town of Dardanelle (#7/2) and southwest of Tonopah Junction, NV (#8/2). Long Valley Caldera Activity continued to decline in the Long Valley caldera with less than 150 events as large as M1.5 during the past week. This compares to 200 events in this size category during the previous 7-day period. Activity remained concentrated in two distinct zones along the south side of the caldera. The week's largest earthquake was in the western zone: a M3.8 that occurred last Friday morning just south of Mammoth Lakes (#2/3). The only other M3 in the caldera occurred Monday morning beneath highway 395, just west of the airport (#1/3). For the first time since early October, a M3 earthquake occurred in the Sierra Nevada terrane south of the caldera. This M3.1 quake occurred Sunday afternoon east of Mt. Morrison (#5/3). It was accompanied by several M2 shocks north and south of the M3 event. USA Seismicity (December 15 - 22) The National Earthquake Information Center reported several domestic earthquakes of note. In the lower 48 states, the only event outside of California was a M3.4 last Monday in the Yellowstone area of northwestern Wyoming (#1/4). Last Wednesday a M3.6 quake occurred in the southern Owens Valley about 35 miles southeast of Lone Pine (#2/4). The largest domestic earthquakes during the week both occurred in Alaska. On December 15 a M4.8 occurred along the southern Seward Peninsula that was felt strongly at Elim and Golovin and less strongly at Koyuk and Nome (#1/5). A week later a M4.9 occurred along the Alaska Peninsula that was felt at Cold Bay, King Cove, Sand Point, and Perryville (#6/5). The Planet Earth (December 15 - 22) The only large earthquake on the planet during the past week was a M6.7 in eastern Papua New Guinea (#4/5). Moderate quakes included a M5.7 near the coast of El Salvador (#2/5) and a M5.5 near the coast of Guatemala (#5/5). Other felt earthquakes included a M4.6 near the west coast of Japan (#3/5) and a M5.0 in Guerrero, Mexico that was felt in Mexico City. Table 1.
