proposal
Magnetohydrodynamic shocks have been inferred from solar radio
bursts of type II in the corona and interplanetary medium. There
is a long standing controversy regarding the driver of these
shocks. Flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) co-exist in a
typical coronal event associated with a shock wave and so it is
not clear which one of these two phenomenon is responsible for
producing the shock. Currently, the following ideas are prevalent:
(i) Both flares and coronal CMEs produce shocks independently,
(ii) Flares produce CMEs which in turn produce shocks, (iii) Fast
CMEs is the sole source of coronal and interplanetary shocks. We
propose to evaluate these three possibilities in the light of
what we have learned after the advent of SOHO and Wind missions
which have provided new information on this issue.
One important aspect of this controversy is the relation between
coronal and interplanetary type II bursts.

We have chosen a set of 28 solar eruptive events that have
simultaneous data coverage from SOHO (EIT, LASCO), YOHKOH (SXT)
and WIND (WAVES) missions. These events will help us track
various disturbances that occur from close to the solar surface
and continue out into the corona and interplanetary medium
so that we can identify the relationship between shocks, flares
and CMEs.
