State and County Emission Summaries

Sources of air pollutant emissions vary from one area to another. State and county summaries grouped by major source sectors are available for each of these pollutants:

Facility Emission Summaries

Facility-level information grouped by major sectors is available in this Google Earth emissions file: http://www.epa.gov/mxplorer/All_Facilities.kmz

Facility-level information is available in KML format which can be viewed with Google Earth™. The information is also available in text format, as CSV or HTML.

If you are new to Google Earth, here is a Google Earth User GuideExit EPA Disclaimer which includes directions for downloading, installing, and using Google Earth.

This Google Earth emissions file is provided by EPA and is not hosted on a Google Earth server. It contains facility-level information for the seven major point-source sectors listed below. Emissions from nonpoint and mobile sources are not available in Google Earth format at this time.

One important feature of this file is that you can toggle on and offExit EPA Disclaimer the sectors that are displayed on the map. So if you want to focus only on Electric Generating Units, you can turn the other sectors off so they don't appear on the map.

Another important feature of this file is that you can tiltExit EPA Disclaimer the display. Since the height of each point corresponds to the total emissions from the facility, you can identify "big" emitters quickly and easily.

Note that some facility coordinates may be based on a different projection system than Google Earth's, resulting in a slight visual shift (less than a mile) from the actual location.

Users new to Google Earth will notice that there are "layers" of information provided in the Google Earth software that are independent of this emissions file. They provide the ability to overlay additional geographic information like roads, topography, and landmarks. Some of these layers may already be turned on when you open Google Earth.

Create a File by State or Sector

Want to focus on a particular state or sector? You can create your own files that are specific to certain states or sectors. Just follow these steps.

Step 1: Select U.S. or State
Step 2: Select an Emissions Sector or All Facilities
Step 3: Select Pollutant (height of the point on the map will be relative to the total tons of this pollutant)
Note: Carbon monoxide (CO) is not listed because it is not typically associated with facility emissions. Lead will be listed when the facility level data are loaded into our database by Spring of 2008.
NOx PM10 PM2.5 SO2 VOCs
Step 4: Select Minimum Pollutant Amount (only facilities with at least this many tons will be mapped)
Step 5: Submit Selections
Create a File by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC)

Want to focus on a particular SIC? You can create your own files that are specific to certain SICs. Just follow these steps.

Step 1: Select Pollutant (height of the point on the map will be relative to the total tons of this pollutant)
Note: CO is not listed because it is not typically associated with facility emissions. Lead will be listed when the facility level data are loaded into our database.
NOx PM10 PM2.5 SO2 VOCs
Step 2: Select a SIC
Step 3: Submit Selections
Create a File by North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)

Want to focus on a particular NAICS category? You can create your own files that are specific to certain NAICS codes.

Step 2: Select a NAIC
Step 3: Submit Selections
