Summary
DATA ACCESS The soundings data are available through the WWW (World Wide Web)/CODIAC interface at http://www.joss.ucar.edu/codiac/ . Priority Sounding Station (PSS) log files are available via anonymous FTP from Florida State University, Center for Atmospheric Prediction Studies. TOGA COARE BACKGROUND TOGA COARE was a ... multidisciplinary, international research effort that investigated the scientific phenomena associated with the interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean in the warm pool region of the western Pacific. The field experiment phase of the program took place from 1 November 1992 through 28 February 1993 and involved the deployment of oceanographic ships and buoys, several ship and land based Doppler radars, multiple low and high level aircraft equipped with Doppler radar and other airborne sensors, as well as a variety of surface based instruments for in situ observations. I. HIGH RESOLUTION SOUNDINGS DATA AT UCAR/JOSS TOGA COARE high resolution sounding data for the Priority Sounding Station (PSS) network were made available by the UCAR/Joint Office for Science Support (JOSS). This release includes the online availability of the soundings for 37 PSS sites including six research vessels. Any gaps in the high resolution sounding data were filled by sounding data from the GTS archives at BoM, Australia and ECMWF, when available. This dataset is the most complete, high-resolution upper-air sounding dataset for the equatorial Pacific region. Also available online are documentation files for each site that describe, in some detail, the site-specific processing conducted at JOSS, as well as information on the release location, availablity of soundings, radiosonde information, and information on the raw data files (available offline). For more information, contact James Moore at UCAR/JOSS (jmoore@ncar.ucar.edu). II. PSS LOGS Meteorological surface data were recorded by local operators at all PSS sites in so-called log-sheets. These logs are available in ASCII format and include the following 11 fields: + Julian day between 1 and 366 (1992 was a leap year). + Four-character GMT time of observation, hhmm (hours and minutes). + Pressure: in millibars, one decimal. + Dry bulb temperature: C degrees, one decimal. + Wet bulb temperature: C degrees, one decimal. + Dew point temperature: C degrees, one decimal. + Relative humidity: %, no decimal. + Wind direction: 1 to 3 letters (N,E,S,W). + Wind speed: knots, no decimal. + Visibility: 1 to 2 digits (km). + Present weather: 1 to 2 digits (WMO code number). Priority Sounding Station (PSS) log files are available via anonymous FTP from Florida State University, Center for Atmospheric Prediction Studies. III. MANUS ISLAND MINI SODAR AND AWS DATA AWS and mini SODAR surface meteorological data were collected on Manus Island at the Momote airport. The AWS recorded surface meteorological parameters such as pressure, temperature, winds, radiation, and humidity in five-minute intervals from 12 January to 8 February 1993. The humidity data are unreliable before 28 January due to an outdated humidity sensor. The data of each block are composed of 3-D winds observed every 15 minutes from the ground level of the antenna located at 2.7 m elevation up to 1000 m in 50-meter intervals. The time for each data block was recorded in local standard time at the end of each 15-minute observation period. Quality
Quality Control at JOSS: The data have passed through the Quality Control process after the original data were converted into the JOSS Quality Control (ASCII) Format (QCF). Data were processed, quality controlled and archived in the highest "native" resolution. The time resolution of PSS data varied from 2 seconds to 60 seconds. All steps in the QCF ... generation process were documented and made available to the users for assessment. JOSS' QC process consists of three stages: a) automatic internal consistency checks, which include 17 automatic checks to evaluate the internal consistency of each individual sounding ("reasonable limit" check); b) vertical consistency checks which include comparisons between adjacent vertical levels; c) visual examination of each sounding. To establish the consistency of upper air measurements across the entire COARE domain, spatial quality of the sounding data was assessed by comparing neighboring data. The general methodology used by JOSS is to produce statistics (mean, standard, deviation, variance) from a simple weighted averaging technique. JOSS generated or gathered several data and documentation files for each sounding location. In addition to the actual data (native format and 5 hPa interpolated sounding data), derived sounding parameters, site-by-site processing and QC documentation, statistics generated from the spatial QC and user-generated GIF imges for selected data are available.
