The report of an Aurora from a place so near to this would answer for this place, and I therefore make report of it as seen at that place, from Whitehall to Crown Point. The aurora appeared as soon as dark enough to be observed, about 8 p.m. It was then simply an arch of pale white light spanning about 50o. its highest point about 10o east of north star and nearly as high. At 8.45 reddish rays streamed up from the west end of the arch nearly to the zenith. a narrow black cloud appeared for a half hour at the commencement, between 8 and 8.45 near the eastern end of the arch and at 11 p.m. another near the western end. After the red rays had played a few moments the shooting rays came up thro' the whole length of arch, which increased to be 75o or 80o in length. The rays shooting quite to the zenith. all white after the first few moments of the the red rays appearance. Soon after 9 p.m. the wavy appearance was very marked and the rays were in patches, that is, interrupted in their upward shooting At 9.30 there was so much that I could easily see the time by my watch. It was first noticed about 8 o'clock in the evening, when there were two broad arches of nebulous light extending across the northern sky, each apparently fifteen or twenty degrees broad, and separated by a dark shade eight or ten degrees in width Below the lower arch there was a dark segment extending about twenty degrees above the northern horizon. At about half past eight o'clock these arches began to break up and form into irregular patches or streamers varying greatly in form and brilliancy; and at nine o'clock the whole northern sky was bespangled with those cloud-like streamers. Soon after nine o'clock two bright beams of white light seemed to shoot out from the extremities of the main arch, and meeting about thirty degrees south of the zenith, formed an irregular and somewhat broken curve from east to west through the heavens. Waves of light soon began to flash across the sky from the northern horizon, reaching the zenith in about one second of time. These wave-like coruscations followed each other in glowing undulations along the irregular lines of light in rapid succession, illuminating every portion of that part of the heavens at least four times in a second, the whole forming one of the most beautiful auroral displays ever witnessed in this latitude. It continued without much diminution of brilliancy till past one o'clock on the morning of the 20th, when it began gradually to fade away and was soon lost in the morning twilight. Double arch; cloud-like streamers; waves of flashing light reaching zenith. [HO] 1870 8 20 CORNISH MAINE N. A pillar of bright red light shot up in the northwest to a great height, and smaller ones in other places. Besides these the north was lighted up with a brilliant red light which kept changing its position. 1871 11 9 CONTOOCOOKVILLE NEW HAMPSHIRE A very fine auroral display; commencing about 6 p.m., red, white and green streamers to an altitude of 50o or more; no flashing or waving motion observed as in the brilliant auroras of the 19th of Aug and the 14th of Oct 1870. no arch seen, brightest the first half hour, continued for several hours. 1871 11 9 DUNBARTON NEW HAMPSHIRE On the 9th there was a splendid display of aurora I did not witness it myself (as on that evening I was indisposed and retired early) and therefore cannot describe it but those who saw it said it was very beautiful. 1871 11 9 TAMWORTH NEW HAMPSHIRE Aurora at 6 p.m. very brilliant and of a blood red hue. One profane man became so terrified at the phenomena that he abandoned swearing - till they assume their usual tint and hue, I suppose. 1871 11 9 NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND Splendid Aurora from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. more beautiful than all that I have seen: At 6 p.m. all the Northern sky was covered with a beautiful crimson light to the height of 50 degrees and continued so for about one hour: then it faded to a rose color, afterwards to a brilliant gold color like moonlight: which was so bright that it made a shadow on the grounds from the houses and spires of Churches. The sky was perfectly clear: no clouds. 1871 11 9 CASTLETON VERMONT 6 p.m. Aurora. Light very deep red. A very fiery belt shooting up in N.W. 6o wide 30o high. At that time bright red streamers were found in the north, extending from the northeast to the northwest where they extended more than half the distance from the horizon to the zenith, and were beautifully blended with those of nebulous white light. Soon after this the whole assumed a nebulous form and continued so for some time. At about eleven o'clock the red and white streamers were again formed extending quite round the heavens and converging towards a beautifully formed corona a little south of the zenith. At half past eleven o'clock these fiery streamers began to revolve around the corona moving from north towards the east, and continued so till they had moved through nearly the entire circuit of the heavens, when the whole gradually faded away and entirely disappeared. 1871 11 10 BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS Clear to 4 M [=a.m.] then nearly cloudy but red Auroral streamers seen through clouds to 6 M [BH] 1871 11 10 CHARLOTTE VERMONT Brilliant aurora with crimson Streamers last night, auroral light on 8. o'c p.m. 1871 11 11 GARDINER MAINE Towards midnight, aurora. 1871 11 11 ORONO MAINE Aurora.
