Abstract	This article describes a new rail link between Spain and France, on the Mediterranean side, which features a mixed high-speed and freight line, 44.4 kilometers long, between Perpignan and Figueras. This railway will offer the Iberian peninsula a way to link transhipment to the rest of Europe. The five-year project was launched in February 2004; the author reports on the progress of the 949 million Euro project thus far. The project includes 10 viaducts, 1 tunnel and 2 covered trenches and of the total 44.4 kilometers, 24.6 km are in France and 19.8 km are in Spain. There are also 61 hydraulic structures, a flyover, and excavation and embankment work totaling over 8 million cubic meters in France and 6.5 million cubic meters in Spain. The line is planned for a maximum sped of 350 km/h (300 km/h for the TGV when put into service), a minimum speed of 300 km/h for the other passenger trains, and 120 km/h for freight trains. Signaling will be the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), level 2. The author describes the work on the Perthus tunnel in detail, including the equipment and personnel used, and the problems encountered in the excavation work thus far.
