ks-crop-weather State Kansas Crop Weather Issue KS-CW0642 Released: October 16, 2006 Agricultural Summary: Most areas of the State received steady but light precipitation over the week, slowing harvest and wheat planting. Though amounts varied greatly, the western third saw slightly higher amounts. Producers averaged 4.4 days suitable for fieldwork last week. Winter wheat planting and row crop harvesting were the major activities. Topsoil moisture was rated 16 percent very short, 35 percent short, 47 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 29 percent very short, 40 percent short, and 31 percent adequate. Field Crop Report: Eighty-five percent of the wheat has been planted, compared to 82 percent last year and 83 percent for the 5-year average. Fifty-four percent has emerged, compared to 53 percent last year and 59 percent for the 5-year average. Eighty-one percent of the corn has been harvested, compared to 77 percent last year and 79 percent for the 5-year average. Ninety-six percent of the sorghum is in the coloring stage, compared to 100 percent last year and 98 percent for the 5-year average. Sixty-nine percent of the sorghum is mature, compared to 79 percent last year and 80 percent for the 5-year average. Thirty-four percent has been harvested, compared to 39 percent last year and 42 percent for the 5-year average. Sorghum condition was rated 11 percent very poor, 20 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 25 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Ninety-six percent of the soybeans were dropping leaves, the same as both last year and the 5-year average. Fifty percent has been harvested, compared to 57 percent last year and 52 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition was rated 8 percent very poor, 18 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 28 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Ninety-six percent of the sunflowers are in the ray flowers dry stage, compared to 100 percent last year and 99 percent for the 5-year average. Ninety-two percent is in the bracts yellow stage, compared to 97 percent last year and 96 percent for the 5-year average. Seventy-three percent is in the mature dry down stage, compared to 82 percent last year and 81 percent for the 5-year average. Nineteen percent has been harvested, compared to 39 percent for both last year and the 5-year average. Sunflower condition was rated 8 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 31 percent good, and 9 percent excellent. Sixty-five percent of the cotton is in the bolls open stage, compared to 81 percent last year and 67 percent for the 5-year average. Twenty percent has been harvested. Cotton condition was rated 5 percent very poor, 15 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Pasture and Range Report: Range and pasture conditions were rated 17 percent very poor, 29 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 14 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies were rated 4 percent very short, 10 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies were rated 14 percent very short, 37 percent short, 47 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Stock water supplies were rated 22 percent very short, 29 percent short, 48 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus.
