CBP Officers Welcome Dalai Lama to Seattle

(04/11/2008)
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tibet’s exiled head of state and spiritual leader, arrived in Seattle at Sea-Tac Airport on Thursday, April 10th, and was greeted by Seattle CBP officers for an expedited clearance. He is here for four days of events which will take place at multiple locations in the Seattle area, including Qwest Field, Seattle Center, and the University of Washington. Many of the events are open to the public and are expected to draw large crowds.

The purpose of the Dalai Lama’s visit will be to attempt to highlight the vision, science and programs of early social, emotional and cognitive learning.

Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born on July 6, 1935, to a farming family, in a small hamlet located in Taktser, Amdo, in northeastern Tibet. At the age of two the child, who was named Lhamo Dhondup at that time, was accepted as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso. The Dalai Lamas are believed to be manifestations of Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and patron saint of Tibet. According to Tibetian tradition, Bodhisattvas are enlightened beings who have postponed their own nirvana and chosen to take rebirth in order to serve humanity.
