DFO Headwaters Relay

The Bureau of Land Management’s Dillon Field Office has accepted an application to conduct an annual competitive running relay event. The activity would take place each summer on public routes through the Tobacco Root, Ruby, and Gravelly mountain ranges.

The Headwaters Relay -- a three-day, 232-mile team relay foot race -- is a competitive running event that has taken place for more than seven years. The permit would be limited to no more than 20 teams (200 participants) and three support vehicles per team (60 vehicles). No overnight use would be authorized. All participants including racers, support teams and race organizers would be required to follow all travel management restrictions on public lands and stay on open existing routes. Public comments will be accepted through April 27.

The BLM manages more land – 256 million acres – than any other federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 western states, including Alaska.
