CONTROL TACTICS INSTRUCTOR RECERTIFICATION COURSE DESCRIPTION The four-day Control Tactics Instructor Recertification Course includes: Review and development of methods of physical intervention and control Review and development of instructional methods, presentations, and safety procedures Updates in technology and procedures Development of selected themes Simulation development, operation, and safety Elementary Performance Testing We have found that instructor recertification should take place yearly for the first two years after initial certification. This is necessary to reduce "instructional drift." Instructional drift is the tendency of instructors to teach or emphasize what they person ally like, and to de-emphasize or refrain from teaching what they do not like or are not especially good at. Other pressures work on the instructors which tend to modify and disorganize their instruction (e.g., supervisors may favor some content or method over ano ther, facilities may not be available to conduct a component of the training, etc.). For these and other reasons, instructors tend, at first, to veer off track. We use instructor recertification courses for the first two years to counteract instructional drift and to supply more information and fine tuning as the individual instructor is ready to assimilate it. We use a progressive elaboration theory. That is, we get into greater depth as the instructor is ready for it. Our experience has shown that, after two recertifications, and relatively continuous active teaching of the system, annual recertification is not necessary. Thereafter, recertification is required every two years to maintain current status, to be authorized to use PSS training materials, and to participate in the instructor development program. We found that establishing more than one instructor at each agency is the ideal way of guarding against the instruction drifting toward the preferences of the lone instructor and to insure that all material taught is authorized by the responsible authority.
