This report presents police statistics on carjackings in Maryland in 1996. |
| Abstract:
|
In 1996 there were 847 carjackings in Maryland, a 5-percent decrease over the 891 carjackings reported in 1995. There were 909 victims of these carjackings; 25 victims received serious injuries, and 2 were killed. There were 1,348 offenders involved in carjackings; the weapon most often used was the handgun. A total of 72.3 percent of carjacking victims were male, 27.5 percent female, and .2 percent unknown. Blacks accounted for 66 percent of the carjacking victims; whites 31 percent; and other races, were 3 percent. Fifty-nine percent of the victims were between 19 and 40 years of age. The perpetrators of carjackings were 96 percent male, 2 percent female, and 2 percent unknown. Offenders were 92 percent black, 6 percent white, and 2 percent other races. A total of 60 percent of the offenders were between the ages of 15 and 26. Other data cover the location of carjackings, day of the week, time of day, vehicles, clearances, and municipalities.
