Site Status & Updates

The Former Hatchco Property (Operable Unit 1) Bountiful Cleaners Incorporated (Operable Unit 2)

Site Description

The Bountiful/Woods Cross 5th South PCE Plume Superfund Site is located in southern Davis County, Utah, approximately 10 miles north of Salt Lake City and covers an area of about 400 acres. Primary land uses at this Site include residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural. Secondary land uses include an interstate highway, railroad tracks, shopping mall and a petroleum refinery. This site is divided into two operable units, Operable Unit 1( OU1) and Operable Unit 2 (OU2).

Hatchco Property (OU1)

This site, known both as OU1 and more commonly the Hatchco Property, is located between Interstate 15 and 800 West Street, and between 500 South and 750 South Streets in Woods Cross, Davis County, Utah. The primary contaminant at this site is trichloroethene (TCE).

In agreement with EPA, Hatchco conducted the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) on the 800 West Plume portion of this site. Hatchco operated as a specialized carrier of bulk petroleum and petroleum products, petroleum solvents (such as toluene and xylene), and asphalt. Hatcho also used its facilities to service, clean, and park tractor-trailers and tank trucks. Located on site is a French drain where past releases of contaminated materials may have occurred.

Bountiful Cleaners Inc. (OU2)

Operable Unit 2, commonly known as Bountiful Family Cleaners, was originally incorporated as Bountiful Cleaners Incorporated (BCI). The Site is bound to the north and south by 300 North and 750 South streets and to the west and east sides by 500 West and 1400 West Streets. These streets are located in the cities of Bountiful, West Bountiful and Woods Cross, UT. A dry cleaning business has operated on this site since the early 1940's and has been sold several times during that period. The release of contamination at the Bountiful Cleaners Inc. occurred before 1967. The primary contaminant at this Site is tetrachloroethene.

Site Risk

Samples taken during the Remedial Investigation (RI) identified solvents referred to as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the ground water underlying the site. Located within the site's boundaries is one municipal well that could become contaminated with VOCs.

In addition, there are residents with private wells. EPA interviewed the residents to determine if any of the wells were being used for drinking water and/or other household uses. The interviews determined the primary use of these wells to be stock watering and irrigation However, a few of these domestic wells are used for drinking water. Most of the domestic wells showed contamination below the maximum contaminant limits (MCLs). All but two of the domestic wells meet the safe drinking water standard.

Media Affected Contaminants Source of Contamination
Ground water Volatile organic compounds, primarily tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE) OU1-wash racks, French drain
OU2 - Bountiful Cleaners Inc.
